Description Finally created these books that have been on my to-do list for too long now.
8 pocket sized books, each with covers of a different type of real wood veneer.Β The books have a ribbon-marker, a pocket in the back and close with a flat black elastic band.

The books are for sale in my shop.

I was asked to do an iPhone cover out of veneer, and I've got the hang of them now, but I was wondering do you have any advice on preventing little hairline cracks in the veneer?

Also what wood do you use on the notebooks, in particular Notebook C on your Etsy shop? I'm wondering do you have one that would be a suitable wood for burning such as birch, beech or maple?

Is there a finish/varnish on the veneer?

Sadly, I never knew what kind of wood I bought. The place I got it at has a whole attic filled with it, and you don't even know how much they want you to pay until you go to the register and they just grab some numbers from their heads it seems

I wish I could give you some pointers but i'm really new at using woodveneer. I think you might find better solutions at a forum of some kind

I rubbed white beeswax on the veneer! Smells for about an hour and then it goes away. It gets rid of the dull shine you get while sanding it

Ah ok. No worries I love shops like that, but also I know what you mean about the sporadic pricing!!

No problems at all. I'll have a look online, and I'm sure I'll find some bits.

Beeswax is a lovely finish, and you can burn through it, but I'd need to know what wood it is. Having said that, I'm going to keep your books in mind for some birthdays and things coming up in the next few months as they're so beautiful.

I'm going back to that shop in a short while. If you tell me what kind of wood works best for pyrography I could always specifically request that. I could then make you some useful books

Oh cool.

You can tell by just looking at the wood if it's suitable. Firstly it has to be light in colour... as light as possible. Secondly, the grain needs to be as non-existant as possible. If it has a lovely tight grain, and pretty knots it's going a nightmare to burn!

Ideally basswood (lime wood), but it's hard to find here. Alternatively maple is excellent followed by cherry, birch, or beech. No grain, or as little as possible.

The absolute worst would be oak, mahogany and walnut! Too dark, and the grin is so tight that the pen won't burn evenly.

Still haven't forgotten about the veneer by the way but it'll probably be 2 weeks before I get back to you as I'm on a tight deadline for a project until then.
