So here's the finished version! It was actually done on Friday, but I finally got it back from my art teacher to get a scan of it.
For those of you who have read Calvin and Hobbes, the comic strip, should remember Tracer Bullet, a fictional detective that Calvin occasionally imagined himself as. Bill Watterson used all black and white to make the images, just like this, and did a lot of work with low lighting and long shadows. I made an attempt to learn from him and also tried to make a small tribute to Tracer Bullet.
I guess I should have thought of it earlier, but my art teacher loved everything except for the fact that he's smoking. She didn't mind personally, but she was disappointed that she couldn't put it on display where everyone from Pre-K and up could see it. I agree with her that this probably should only get shared with the high schoolers.
In case it makes you wonder, no, I neither smoke myself nor endorse smoking at all. It's not a smart thing to do.

Yeah, it did take a while-- especially since I was watching a movie at the same time as I was doing it.
I used an x-acto knife, which helped a lot. It's a lot like a pen with a blade at the end, so I could just trace the lines that way to cut it. Gluing them on was tricky, because I also tried to keep them in just the right spots.

LOL procrastinating? But I would probably watch a movie too! which one by the way?
And yeah I know about x-acto kinfes! the are really good for cutting straight lines.
The gluing has to be trick so the pieces didn't move out of place

No, not really. I was working at the same time and didn't need it to be finished right away. It was called Runaway Jury. It was a bit more intense than most movies I enjoy, but the plot was so full of twists, yet it was easy to understand. It was a very, very fun story!
Actually, it's just gluestick. Some of the pieces are pretty small, so liquid glue would just make a mess. Therefore, it's actually not attached very well. It needs to be handled gently.

Yeah, and it was portrayed so well! I love Calvin and Hobbes still! I'm pretty sure I own all the books of comic strips, though I don't have all the special collections.

I think it would be perfect without the eyes. In my mind, they should be hidden behind / shadowed by the brim of the hat
also makes it more mysterious...

But either way, great work! It looks really cool.

You know, I wanted the eyes to look a lot more menacing than they do here. I think you're right, if I can't make the guy look kinda mean, then he'd be better off without eyes at all.
Thanks, Noxid!
