--Step by Step-- Haruka x Aquaphobic!Reader

"Let's swim," your raven-haired boyfriend suggests.

"Umm... you can go. I'll stay on the shore," you state.

He eyes the water, a glint in his cerulean spheres. "The water looks nice."

You give a weak laugh. "Go ahead then Haru, I'll wait here, okay?"

Here you were, standing next to your boyfriend, admiring the calm, blue waves and the sandy beach. Haruka, who was clearly a fan of the water, had invited you out to the beach with him. He thought it would be a nice way for the two of you to relax. You didn't want to refuse his offer. He had looked absolutely adorable when he asked you out on a date. Haruka looked absolutely delighted to be able to go somewhere with you. But, in order not to demolish his dreams you didn't let him know a little secret of yours.

"[Name]..." Haruka speaks.

It's obvious he had seen through your weak attempt at a lie. His full attention was on you, and he looked a little worried. He knew there was something you hadn't told him.

"Can you... not swim?" he asks.

"Well, I...," your voice was quiet. "Not exactly..."

Haruka turned towards you, a hint of concern obviously shown in his gaze. With a single look, he urged you to go on, and explain your issue.

You glanced down to your feet. You moved your toes, digging them into the sandy ground below you. The waves shifted forwards and backwards, touching the tips of your toes. The cool water caused you to take a few steps back, as if you had taken a step on molten rock instead of the cool liquid.

Haruka noticed your reaction. His mouth was in an "o" shape, realizing the issue. It made sense to him why you were never came near the pool whenever he had after school practice. The two of you lived near an ocean, and you tried your best to avoid it. There had been several times when he had invited you to go to the pool with him, but you always had an excuse.

How did he never realize you have a fear of the water? His own best friend felt the same way for oceans. How come he didn't realize his girlfriend was similar?

"I'm sorry...," you mumbled. “I never told you because you love the water and you always look so happy in it, so I didn't want to stop you from feeling happy. I really love seeing that relax look in your eyes and the smile that comes with it since you-"

You stopped mid-sentence feeling someone’s fingers intertwined with yours. Haruka was holding onto your hand, his gaze still on the water. This is one of the feelings you loved. Knowing that your stoic boyfriend cares for you. His slender fingers fit perfectly with yours. Both of your hands were different, but the contrast is what made holding hands feel wonderful.

"Trust me, the water isn't scary," he states, then turns to you. "I'll help you get rid of your fear, just don't let my hand go."

You appreciate his efforts, but to you, it seemed impossible to get rid of a fear. Numerous times you had attempted to get near water, but it still frightened you. Water, which was supposed to represent life, could easily take life away as well.

"[First], I'm here for you." His blue eyes gazed into yours.

You nodded slowly and took a deep breath. "Okay."

The raven-haired male started to guide you towards the shore. “Tell me whenever you want to quit."

You nod.

He stops and speaks in a low tone. “Put your feet in the water."

Taking a deep breath, you take a small step into the blue waves. At the moment, you felt fine. Haruka has his hand wrapped around yours and it helps calm you down.

"I like it," he starts. “When the water touches my feet it feels nice. Almost ticklish."

You giggle. “You're right."

Noticing how relaxed you look, Haruka thought you were ready to initiate the next step. He stood in front of you and took both of your hands in his. He walked backwards treading you through the water.

Slowly the water rises brushing against your leg. You felt relaxed.

The grip on your boyfriend’s hands softened. Fear was leaving your body, being replaced by a calming sensation. Feeling the water brush against you was not as frightening as you remembered it. Or maybe, it was Haruka that made you feel relaxed.

Your eyes glanced at his. He took a subtle glance at you, noticing your relaxed expressions before staring at the water again, pink dusting his cheeks.

Haruka broke the silence. “You don't mind me going to deeper water?"

"Go ahead," you replied.

Again, he slowly guided you. Haruka would take slow steps, every now and then glancing at you.

You had originally had a relaxed expression, but it was slowly changing back to a frightened one. The grip on Haruka's hand tightened once again.

His blue eyes gazed at you with worry. Your nails were digging into his hands, and you were starting to shake tremendously. Haruka took action and quickly led you to shore. He wasn't going to risk you getting terrified for his mistake.

Once your feet touched the sandy beach again, you let out a sigh of relief. Your lip quivers, tears threatening to come out. You utter an "I'm sorry..."

Haruka placed a hand on your shoulder and pulled you towards him. His other hand snaking around your waist. You wrapped your own hands around him, giving a tight squeeze. Your boyfriend’s chin was set on your head.

“It's okay, the water still likes you," he muttered the encouraging words.

You laughed silently. "Thank you Haru."
