Description Why are so many sad things happening in the world..?

It's not as precise as my usual works are. Inspired by Liberty Leading the People by Eugéne Delacroix. It's sad that no one is saying
#prayforsyria #prayforeritrea and so on. But I stil hope all those people in Paris will be safe soon.

I recognized immediately the source of inspiration! It was a strong and powerful painting and your version is adapted for the current situations very well.
Very touching idea and concept!

Good choice, because a radical islamist wouldn't never accept an image of a half naked woman! Talking about nuditiy: I am asking myself how long it goes till someone here at DA demands a mature tag for this picture...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Aadavy In reply to GDupons [2015-11-17 12:18:58 +0000 UTC]

Well, if there will be someone, I will use a mature tag but no one has complained yet
and I haven't even thought about this! Your point gave it a whole new dimension

GDupons In reply to Aadavy [2015-11-17 22:18:35 +0000 UTC]

Yes, it shows especially how prude many people in the USA are. Even if there's a noble cause to show nuditiy (like in this case), they just see the bare breasts and goes tilt! In Europe we take it much more easier! The original painting from Eugéne Delacroix is a perfect example for it. It was once at the 100 Franc bill. Or in other words: Before there Euro comes, a half naked woman was in the wallets of most french people. Even at the piggy banks of (how shocking!) children. Because 100 Francs wasn't nothing but also not a fortune - about $20.

But praying? No. Never.

anndilek In reply to VonRabenherz [2015-11-15 23:18:25 +0000 UTC]

It's a slogan. Thing we say to support. I'm a nonbeliever and yet I pity the Parisians as all other attacked nations of last days.
Don't pray to god for Paris. Wish for a world where such prayers are not necessary.

At least my opinion.

VonRabenherz In reply to anndilek [2015-11-16 02:04:52 +0000 UTC]

I pity them as well, but I'd never pray. It's such a useless thing, really. When has praying ever helped anyone in the history of mankind?

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

anndilek In reply to VonRabenherz [2015-11-17 22:13:55 +0000 UTC]

Depends how you look at it. Beliefs definitelly influenced the past and no doubt they do today. Literally, praying hasn't probably really helped anyone, except coincidences and already probable things, yet the placebo effect of being powered up by this kind of unearthy strenght has empowered people's minds for quite a while. This begging people do is just asking for a miracle or pointing back to the times when prayers and faith meant a lot. A cultural heritage, i'd say.

Well no ones forcing you to pray. The thing is, over 86% of the world believes in a higher power. About 63% of the world follows the Abrahamic religions. France is predominately Catholic Nation, as is much of Europe, being split between that and the Protestant sects. So they appreciate the idea that they are in our prayers. You may not see the meaning or point in it, and that is a perfectly good opinion to have, but they do. Give your support in whatever way you want. I will pray for them.

VonRabenherz In reply to Roccodog1 [2015-11-17 18:29:23 +0000 UTC]

Those statistics are problematic at best. There are a few articles out there dealing with it, but suffice it to say, the number of people who actually believe in a god is much lower than you may think, and still dropping constantly.

France, by the way, is one of the most atheistic countries in Europe, with about 40% stating to not believe in any higher power whatsoever, according to polls.
The only country in Europe that can top this is Sweden. Europe in general is actually not that religious any more. People are finally waking up and realizing that they were believing in bronze-age fairy tales for decades.
Religion doesn't have even remotely as much of a hold and position in european society as it still (sadly) does in the US. I've lived in the US for a year, I've seen shit ... people here in Europe are not even close to being that whacked in the head about religion.

So ... my point is ... actually, your chances of offending someone in France with your "prayers" is actually quite high. I know that I personally would definitely take offense if some of my loved ones were among those killed, and people would tell me that they pray for them. It wouldn't be a consolation, it would be a slap in the face for me, because "praying" is an empty, hollow thing that serves no purpose whatsoever. It doesn't bring the victims back, it doesn't ease the pain of their relatives when they know there is neither a god nor a life after this one. I'm sure some people in France feel the same way now. Not all of them, no, but some definitely.

I feel with these people, and I am absolutely, positively enraged about these disgusting, bestial barbarians who commit the most heinous of crimes against humanity, all because their religion commands them to. But I don't pray. Because it does nothing. It's of no use to anyone, least of all the people who died last weekend. I feel it's disrespectful toward them.

VonRabenherz In reply to SMiki55 [2015-11-16 02:05:42 +0000 UTC]

Because praying equals doing nothing. There is no point to it, other than making you feel like you're doing something when you're not.
