Description So pretty much drew this for one of two reasons. Primarily: it's a scene I wrote for my RP Precipice of War, where the Chinese commander of intelligence/IB - Yan Sing - and a old friend of his go to visit Unit 731's compound in Harbin on the anniversary of its liberation.

The other being, Unit 731 was real, and they were a bitch.

Historically, I didn't change much with Unit 731 in the RP apart from they stuck around ten years long because there was no WW2 to cut them short. Unit 731 was a unit in the Japanese Imperial Army who, from 1932 to their dissolution at the end of WW2 (in Precipice of War, until the Chinese Communists captured their Harbin installation in a rush attack and killed/captured every scientist, engineer, and military personnel involved) covertly studied and practiced chemical and biological warfare on the Chinese country-side.

Within their range, they rounded up and performed brutal experiments on Chinese prisoners, subjecting them to various diseases to watch them die. Often times, live vivisections were practiced on these men (In many cases, without anesthetics) to watch their organs die from the disease.

Other experiments included observing how a human body could function without a stomach or other organs by removing them.

Tests regarding the effects of explosives were conducted by strapping civilians to posts and arranging them around a live bomb at varying intervals. The explosion would result in surgeries for some, autopsies for the rest.

Experiments on the effects of hypothermia and gangrene were performed by freezing, thawing, and perhaps amputating a limb and maybe sewing it back on the other-side of the victim's body to watch how un-treated gangrene attacked the body.

The Unit is also attributed to the creation of Bubonic Plague bombs which they unleashed over the country-side, the poisoning of local water supplies, and the distribution of anthrax-infected food. In these cases, Unit 731's medical personnel would go and conduct autopsies of vivisection on victims in the field.

Other horrific experiments include hanging people upside down to see how long it takes for them to die. Injecting pure oxygen into their arteries. And exposing victims to lethal amounts of X-rays.

By the end of WW2, Genero Shiro Isiji and many of the Unit's higher ups were given a full pardon by the US government in exchange for the information they had collected.

In Precipice, it only ended in 1953 when the compound was assaulted by Commander Yan-Sing and his men, killing Shiro Isiji and capturing most of the unit's studies.

The post I have written on the matter: [link]

I'd post it in the description if I didn't fear the description was long enough already. But if I must say, it's very difficult to put down the sheer scale and breadth of Unit 731's actions. After writing that, I found I had forgotten a lot more and barely touched on what they did.

Also, you be wondering why it's colored so minimalistically: Because. I wasn't necessarily going for realism. Supposed to be something of a some-what simplified drawing.

Worse? Japan has use what caused not even half of the Chinese deaths to fabricate a victim mentality. All but forgetting what they did, and even claiming it to be propaganda.

What do I say to that?

The short answer is...

"A full pardon... in exchange for the information they had collected"
No, no, no. Summary execution, then TAKE the research. No sense of justice whatsoever.

Unfortunately, that is how history went. If there was any since of justice Shiro and his crew should'v been put on trail and exposed.
