Description Narn i Chîn Húrin "Movie Poster" – Forbidden Love

This is a "movie poster layout" featuring the key players in the final act of the tragedy that is the story of the children of Húrin, the fateful final years in Brethil. Túrin/Turambar, Nienor/Níniel, the Black Sword Gurthang, Brandir the Lame, Glaurung the dragon and Morgoth laughing in the background as his curse is fulfilled..

I was inspired to draw this already in January, I think, when I heard of the plans to publish the new book that would present Narn i Chîn Húrin as a completed continuous narrative. So this is to celebrate "the first new Tolkien book since the Silmarillion.." Barely finished it in time for the book's publication.

This is actually part 5 – I have ideas for 4 other "posters" like this of the other stages of Túrin's life.. but we shall see if I'll ever get round working anything out of those.. I think it might make a neat series, though.

HB pencil + some photoshop.

Nice, got alot of the main characters, always felt bad for Brandir. Always left behind....

Only thin I don't like is Melkor's depiction, at least the eyes. They should be pure fathomless shadow. And when I mean pure shadow, I mean twisted and crooked.

I just want to cry looking at this picture.
I'm amazed at the amount of skill that this must have required - it's spot-on. It just speaks millions. And the way Morgoth has his hands symbolically reaching over them. Yikes. It's just a powerful rendition.

Then Morgoth gets his butt kicked later, who was laughing then I wonder? lol. Served him right. Turin was avenged.

I rememeber, they were brother and sister...this story was touching me in the deepest of my heart...isn't it cruel to do something like this...I sadly cannot remember why they got this curse on them...I even couldn`t read the book until now, because one of my friends is still reading on it o_Ô But I like this picture at all...Nothing on the picture (I mean the location of Turin and Nienor) let imagine what will happen with them in future...

The whole composition of the picture is quite cool^^ I'd like to see the other

Thank you! It's indeed a sad story.. (the reason was that their father Húrin defied Morgoth, and so he cursed his entire family).

Thank you! Tragic, yes.. but what a great story, nevertheless.

aautio In reply to Winterthorn [2007-07-29 16:12:30 +0000 UTC]

Ok.. Toaster in Finnish would be "leivänpaahdin" (although that sentence still wouldn't make too much sense.. you'd have to say "minä rakastan leivänpaahtimia" -- that is, unless you're professing your undying love for one specific toaster.. )

I like such epic pictures with lots of detail in it and the idea of making a movie poster of the story makes a wonderful image indeed!
Wonderful work again, I like that very much.
And: finally a portrayal of Glaurung which really fits my own imagination of him!

By the way, please excuse me for not having commented on the last pictures… They were wonderful, especially the inked version of Eowyn confronting the Witch-king. It's just that I'm often too lazy to comment on anything if I'm weary, especially if there are lots of new pictures at the same time… *sighs*

Hurin's family story has always been my favourite part of my favourite Tolkien book and I need to say im not disappointed at all with how you portrayed it... all the key pieces are there (except maybe for Hurin, with who it all started, but i cant see him fitting in either) and I LOVE the way Turin looks, because he's very close to how I imagine him.. Morgoth looks... like the personification of evil xD He really looks scary and noble and royal at the same time, so it's also very good. And Glaurung is also awsome i love him too
the sword, however, looks kinda "left out" in that place of the drawing... like it's just standing there instead of actually being part of the action :S
ow well, very nice piece, going straight into my

You never disappoint.

I have (and have finished reading already) The Children of Hurin. A great read and the sketches were nice while the paintings were ... so so. I was disappointed that more of the characters weren't depicted. I'm glad you and a few others have been further inspired and are taking up the reins.

This is I think one of the greatest stories... I was always wondering why do Tolkien kill them - answer is one - incest is banned by christianity. I agree ofcourse with but... well - isn't real, pure love more important?... I always wanted them live together and forgetting about everything else.
And the story ends sooo bad...

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

C-Ungol In reply to Dunadan-from-Bag-End [2007-04-23 21:44:52 +0000 UTC]

well it's not really the christiananity part so much as it had to happened, Morgoth cursed all of Hurins kin so there was no way they were going to live happily had the incest happened or not...
