Description The Parting of Finrod and Amarië

"--But at the rear went Finarfin and Finrod, and many of the noblest and wisest of the Noldor; and often they looked behind them to see their fair city, until the lamp of Mindon Eldaliéva was lost in the night. More than any others of the Exiles they carried thence memories of the bliss they had forsaken--."

- J. R. R. Tolkien: The Silmarillion, chapter 9: Of the flight of the Noldor

"--For indeed she whom he had loved was Amarië of the Vanyar, and she went not with him into exile."

- J. R. R. Tolkien: The Silmarillion, chapter 15: Of the Noldor in Beleriand

This is the second incarnation of this Silmarillion illustration.. with sepia tone a brown paper background done in Photoshop (Thank you for the idea and help, Ana ! ). For the description I'll quote myself below:

---

Another Tolkien illustration.. I kinda promised poor Finrod to do a little bit better job portraying him than the last time so this one is something like a character study for him. Somehow i still managed to make him look a bit slow, but at least it's better than the last one.

This is a moment that Tolkien doesn't describe in his writing, but of which i've always had a very clear image in my mind. Even though the Noldor departed Valinor in a haste, i just can't see Finrod doing that without seeing his beloved first. Here he is dressed and armed to be prepared for the journey he is about to embark on against his better judgement.

Pencil drawing, quite straightforward and simple. I wanted to keep them static and still but added the wind effect to have some sense of motion in the composition. This is supposed to be a sad moment but somehow i think it still comes off as little too sweet.. Yes, i know that i draw like a girl!

EDIT: Better scan, new paper background

I need some help. Was the aged paper effect done in Photoshop? 'Cause I just got Photoshop hoping that I would be able to age my own art, but I spent nearly an hour looking for a way to do it and still found nothing. Is this aging done in Ps and if not, is it possible for me to get whatever program you used? Thanks!

Oh, thank you! I absolutely love your style so i'm really happy to hear this! This picture (as well as most of my work) definitely needs a better scan, though.. the contrast and levels are all over the place. I hope i'll have time next month to update the works in my gallery.

aautio In reply to Chararwen [2005-12-30 10:58:43 +0000 UTC]

Thank you! Actually.. in this one it's just your everyday ordinary crappy-quality printer paper!

The brown paper effect was added in Photoshop. *mindofka suggested the method to me (i scanned a watercolour paper, tweaked the contrast and colours until it was the proper hue and then applied that to the background of my illustrations.. and of course colorized the lineart to sepia, tweaked the levels, added shadows and highlights to the paper. It's a 15 min operation, really, and these are essentially still just pencil pieces.. but i think it does add a nice feel to them).

Cool! Maybe I'll try something like that in my next drawing - I prefer using regular printer paper to draw, but I always have so much trouble with backgrounds, but that might be just because i suck at coloring. lol

Very beautiful. The leaves of the tree falling down they reinforce the autumn idea, the separation, the sadness. Very melancholy for what is very elvish. I am charmed with.

aautio In reply to Elenmire [2005-12-30 10:48:15 +0000 UTC]

Thank you. Yes, I wanted to emphasize the idea of autumn at the darkening of Valinor and the sadness of their parting.. then in the drawing of their reunion i wanted to go for the opposite theme, a glad spring with flowers blooming. Glad you like it!

Very beautiful.. I like the detail on the headdress.. it's a very nice touch... the way the wind has caught her outfit is just perfect too... also, it's so nice to see people paying attention to the less popular couples...

Thank you. Yes, I think Tolkien's world is just full of little stories that wait to be discovered.. and illustrated!

Lucky you for being able to... you're a very good artist! I love the intricacies of the world that Tolkien created... you could spend a lifetime exploring it, just as he did, and still never be finished!

Where are the comments? This piece deserves so much more recongnition!

I love this, it has to be one of my favorite pieces so far on DA, the look of aged paper, the sketchy yet exact lines, the character choices! IT'S SO GREAT! (sorry if I sound creepy )

I forgot to comment on this when I faved it last night. LOVE IT! Finrod is one of my favourite Silm charries (beneath those irrepressible Feanorian boys of course ) Amarie is so pretty. I tried to draw her a while back but my version sucked. I should probably give her another attempt now that my art style has improved so much.

Thank you! Yes, Finrod is probably my biggest favourite, has been ever since i first read the Silmarillion, though now i would add many others to the list of my top favs. There are still some flaws in this illustration.. i feel tempted to do another drawing of Finrod and Amarië.

Yes, i've seen your portrait of Amarië and i like it -- and i'd really love to see how you would envision her anew.

I love this. Finrod is my favorite Tolkien character, and it's SO hard to find good art of him. It's even harder to find anything portraying him and Amarie, and you've done so beautifully. Wonderful line quality and subtle shading. This made my day.

Thank you. I'm glad you like it. Finrod has always been my favourite and i've drawn him a few times already.. and i most certainly will draw him again. This one of the first and i'm not completely happy with him here.. and especially not with Amarië. Hhmm.. perhaps i should do another drawing of them -- of their meeting after Finrod's resurrection, happy instead of sad.

Yes, you need to! It's great.. even if it isn't a story like LotR, but more like a collection of short stories and epic historical records -- or perhaps that's just why it is so great!
