Description The Oath of Felagund

“The sons of Finarfin bore most heavily the brunt of the assault, and Angrod and Aegnor were slain; beside them fell Bregolas lord of the house of Bëor, and a great part of the warriors of that people. But Barahir the brother of Bregolas was in the fighting further westward, near to the Pass of Sirion. There King Finrod Felagund, hastening from the south, was cut off from his people and surrounded with small company in the Fen of Serech; and he would have been slain or taken, but Barahir came up with the bravest of his men and rescued him, and made a wall of spears about him; and they cut their way out of the battle with great loss. Thus Felagund escaped, and returned to his deep fortress of Nargothrond; but he swore an oath of abiding friendship and aid in every need to Barahir and all his kin, and in token of his vow he gave to Barahir his ring. ”

-- J. R. R. Tolkien: The Silmarillion, chapter 18: Of the Ruin of Beleriand and the Fall of Fingolfin

Here's a scene I’ve wanted to draw for quite a while. ( And no, it’s not a gay wedding, even if they’re holding hands and there’s a ring involved.. ). It also took quite a while to draw, seeing as I started it sometime around Christmas.. I had more or less finished it by May but I didn’t have the time to do the Photoshop work before now..

So here King Finrod Felagund swears his oath of friendship to Barahir after the Men of the house of Bëor saved his life during the onslaught of Dagor Bragollach. That fateful oath would ultimately prove his undoing but eleven years later when he was honour-bound to accompany Beren on his quest for the Silmaril. However, without Barahir, Beren and the others Finrod would have almost certainly fallen that day at the Fen of Serech.

The drawing is partially an excuse for drawing armoured people for a change; Finrod and the Nargothrond captain in the background wear what I’d call traditional Ñoldorin scale mail and Barahir wears a complex suit of intricate leather armour. The all wear coifs of Dwarf-mail. The decorative heraldic themes are based on Tolkien’s designs for Bëor, Finarfin and Felagund as well as =elegaer ’s ideas for Finrod.

The slightly wacky anatomy aside, I like how this turned out. I put a lot of blood and mud and grime and cuts here and there as an attempt to show how they’ve just hacked their way out of a battle against all odds. The wisps of mist drifting in the wind are there for some extra atmosphere and depth effect and also to illustrate the fact that the skirmish took place in a swampy location. I will probably do a coloured version at some point if I'll have time.. not likely anytime soon.

HB pencil and Photoshop.

that is awesome that you chose to illustrate such a powerful moment between Men and Finrod.
I read this story recently of the Battle of Sudden Flame and the brave rescue of Finrod by Barahir. And its truly tragic that that oath gets him killed.
I love the days when Men and Elves were friends...

Have you seen or hung out with many people who wear full steel armour? (as opposed to aluminium or other lighter materials) Felagund especially has the perfect hunch that men in armour tend to adopt, and the angle of the sword he's holding, all these little things really strike me that you paid that much attention to detail and pose Awesome picture.

Good work on the scale mail. Any tips you could give me on how to draw it?

Golly, you know SO much about the Silmarillion! I admire you greatly for that! I've just started to read through it for the second time but I tend to forget things easily This is fantastic, you have a very unique and beautiful style

Barahir looks remarkably well groomed for having been in battle D

The clothing and armour here is soooo good. Its functional, practical, yet beautiful and ornate where it can be. And the flag is brilliant

Yeah, doesn't he? That's because he's wearing hurricane-proof hairspray! Didn't you know they named Middle-Earth's first range of hair products after him? You know.. Lúthien would have never become renowned for her later hairstyle experiments if it wasn't for Beren, the Barber of Barahir.. no, wait.. how did it go again..?

Why, thank you!

Very awesome piece, the details are amazing, well, details in your work usually are but this has got to be one of the best!
I especially like Barahir's face and expression.

Thank you! There was plenty of work in the details of this one but I'm quite happy with it as well, so I feel it paid off.

Wow, this has got to be one of my favourites of yours!!! Finrod is one of my all time favourite characters, and I love that rescue scene!!!!

I think my favourite part of this drawing, however, is your depictiong of Barahir - perfect!!! I adore the armour (as per usual - I always love good armour, as I make it myself). I also love the bedragled look of Finrod, as if he did just come out of a near-death situation in battle. <333333

Thank you! Finrod is one of my favourites as well and I always wanted to draw this scene. I wanted to make them look like they had just survived a tough fight (although as pointed out, I've got to admit Barahir must be wearing some hardcore hair products to keep his style intact all through the battle..)

Gay wedding? To calm you down, not all people on the internet think something like that at every opportunity… we devART users are innocent and nice people. Or at least, most of us *laughs*.
However, nice work as always.

Heheh yay! First the Feanorians and now Finrod. Ah my Silm quota is truly filled. Finrod's hairstyle a little different from how I always envisioned him but then I guess the vision differs from artist to artist. I love his threads though.

Glad you like..

Hmm, I pictured that as a handy hairstyle that would keep the hair off your face in a fight.. But perhaps he should have just borrowed Barahir's hairspray..

No, just kidding. In all seriousness, this is a great representation of the oath. I love the details on Felagund's... dress-thing.

Anyway, thanks! And the dress-thing is called a tabard, btw.

This one is great, maybe Barahir is too tall for my vision, but it doesn't matter - very nice vision with great details again, with visible differences in elven and human outfits.

Thanks again! I always figured the Men of the three houses would be quite tall, although yeah.. I've never actually pictured Barahir as an exceptionally tall individual. He's shorter than Finrod here, but I didn't like to make him seem like a midget either. (And Finrod would have been slightly taller if I could've fit him in the paper..). I imagine Finrod would have been a little over 2 m tall, so that would make Barahir 190+ cm here.. perhaps he should be a bit shorter.

"I always figured the Men of the three houses would be quite tall"

I just red recently in HoME and if I understood it well Barahir's folks - Houseof Bëor, right? - were shorter than the golden haired, it's in 'Of Dwarves and Man' in HoME XII, p.308. Of course it doesn't mean that Barahir wasn't tall, he might be one of the not so common tall guys among his men. And these below are only ideas, not the way it looks like
My Finrod is also over 2 m tall - in fact I take 7 feet = 213 or to make life easier 210 cm as average Noldo height. Breogan has got slightly different measure but it's all around that, either (I didn't finish our discussion there [link] ).

Heh, people always seem to think the Elves were ridiculously tall, but personally I've gone for some moderation.. I’ve given this quite a lot of thought in the past (and also very recently, actually..). I think perhaps Thingol could've been over 7' tall, but that’s about it.

I don’t expect too many people to agree with me, but I figured the average height for the Ñoldor would be around 6' (183 cm) for the men and 5'8" (173 cm) for the women. That’s still "very tall" – especially as people generally weren't likely to be very tall back then (yeah, yeah, I know it's a fictional era, but still..). Those born in Aman in the light of the Trees would often be taller than the Elves were originally or those born in the Exile. I also imagine the Vanyar being on the average slightly taller than the Ñoldor.

The Sindar and the Men of the three first houses would be almost as tall, with the house of Hador the tallest and Men of Brethil (house of Haleth) the shortest. Other humans, like the Easterling, would be considerably shorter. I think the Númenoreans in their prime were probably taller than anyone, even the Elves.

I've always liked the idea that Tolkien seems to have had initially that Men (or Edain, more specifically) were more physical than the Elves in appearance, but still frailer in reality.. Sort of like Men had stronger bodies, but the Elves had stronger fëar that empowered their bodies.. so they were actually capable of much more than Men, even if they looked much more thin and slender - which would also make them seem somewhat taller (- hence the slightly anorexic look of my Elves..). Does that make any sense?

Thanks!

That's cool.. if you'll ever end up doing a tattoo like that I'd love to get a photo of it!

I've been thinking of the Elvish cities.. especially Gondolin. But so far I haven't done anything bigger than some backgrounds. They would be interesting to draw more extensively, though.
