Description The Threat of Fëanor

”Fingolfin bowed before Finwë, and without word or glance to Fëanor he went from the chamber. But Fëanor followed him, and at the door of the king’s house he stayed him; and the point of his bright sword he set against Fingolfin’s breast.”

- J. R. R. Tolkien: The Silmarillion, chapter 7: Of the Silmarils and the unrest of the Noldor

This is the second incarnation of this Silmarillion illustration.. sepia tone with a brown paper background done in Photoshop (Thank you for the idea and help, Ana ! ). For the description I'll quote myself below:

---

So, here Fëanor threatens his half-brother’s life – a deed that will result in his banishment from Tirion. Intended mainly as a character study for Fëanor and Fingolfin. (I have this ambitious idea of painting a huge triptych called “Lords of the Noldor” some day. Featuring Finwë with his sons in the middle frame, the sons of Fëanor to the left and the children of Fingolfin and Finarfin to the right – I don’t know when I would have time to do it, but before I start it takes a lot of drawings like this to define my image of each of those individuals.. and that’s 19 people!)

Well, anyway.. back to THIS drawing. I’ve always imagined Fingolfin being the tallest of the three sons of Finwë and the one that looked the most like his father. I picture him with longer hair and noble features and I’m sure he was fond of wearing flashy clothes like that robe and kimono-style overcoat (yeah, yeah -- I know it looks like a dressing gown ).. loose and comfortable yet somehow ceremonial. This is how I imagine most of the elves living in the carefree bliss of Aman were dressed like. Valinor’s latest fashion trend in shoes would have to be very pointy or “au naturel”, i.e. going barefoot..

Fëanor, on the other hand, I’ve always pictured with short hair and sharp features, donning more practical clothes and always wearing a lot of jewelry he had made himself. Here I went for something like a swashbuckler look for him.. I know that according to the book Fëanor was wearing a helmet and probably armour as well during this scene, but as this drawing is intended as much as a character (and clothing) study as an illustration, I wanted to draw both elves wearing what I imagine was the most common for them.

While the drawing has some errors in it, I’m quite happy with it; especially since I think I managed to capture the most essential feelings in the scene: Fëanor’s anger and Fingolfin’s calm defiance and silence despite his injured pride and his half-brother’s harsh words.

HB pencil and 0.5 mech. pencil, about 4 ½ hours in total.. most of which was spent drawing the decorations. This time I decided I won’t even try those Celtic knotwork designs, having had something like a nervous breakdown with them the last time.. I guess those random floral scribbles work too.. they could even be considered a bit more “elven” even if they don’t look quite as good.

He was wearing his high, red plumed helmet when this threat was made. That much was specified so I'd imagine he's be wearing martial dress. And surely his hair was long and flowing! For Elves love such.

I've seen a lot of art of Feanor with short hair. I've always wondered why.

Feanor, a being who had talent beyond others but an egomaniac and a callous asshole.

I love Fingolfin's pose and expression. It's like, "What did I do!?"

I bet that just pissed Fëanor off even more.

If I have to be serious, I don't like the way you pictured Feanor here, it's great when it comes to technical way, but in my opinion he should look more noble and high, not like hot blooded youngster ( even if he was hot blooded, of course ).

aautio In reply to Grisznak [2005-12-30 12:13:24 +0000 UTC]

Well, we all have our own vision of these characters.. This is pretty close to the way i see Fëanor. I definitely wanted to depict him here as enraged and hot blooded.. but I'm not sure what you mean by "noble and high" exactly as i don't think those are in any way really contrary to his emotion here.

Thank you for the comment.

You have managed to transmit the emotions of the character in the scene, their expresion and poses. I like the character desing, the clothes, detail,.

Your gallery really is wonderful! I just love the detail you put into everything - the details in the clothing, in the small portion of the background. Fingolfin is great, but I really like Feanor - you've captured his anger and superiority Have you seen Jenny Dolfen's picture of Fëanor and Fingolfin? A link is here: [link] She was the one who persuaded me towards the idea of Fëanor with short hair!

It's interesting you've put flames on Fëanor's scabbard - one of my ongoing projects behind the scenes is to draw out the eight swords he created - and the RP I created is at the moment very much based around Fëanor's sword, which I christened Naira, the Heart of Flame. Actually *thinks* I've got a sketch of my ideas about it somewhere. Perhaps I'll dig it out and finish it!

aautio In reply to elegaer [2005-11-08 23:43:13 +0000 UTC]

Yes, I've seen her works and they're absolutely fantasting! Actually they were a big inspiration for me and part of the reason why i started drawing these in the first place. Her watercolours are just incredible.. I also like her interpretation of these characters a lot.. most of them are very close to the way i see them. Must be because it seems she has been just as nitpicky with the "historically correct" details as me! Yeah, i don't think it's written anywhere that Fëanor had short hair.. but i've always pictured him that way too.

Yes, i've used some kinds of decorative themes that i saw fitting for certain characters.. like flames for Fëanor, stars and eagles for Fingolfin and Fingon, diamonds for Turgon, serpents and floral patterns for Finrod, etc. But i had all but forgotten about the fact that Tolkien had designed actual heraldry for some of those characters too, before i happened to find your gallery and designs. That's why asked you about them.. i think they would make nice decorative elements in clothing, shields etc. And yes, I remember seeing some of those sword designs in your gallery too, it'd be interesting to see more!

sorry for taking so long to answer some of your comments - for some reason I suddenly seem to be inundated with questions at the moment, and I'm slowly wading through them!

Jenny really is a wonderful artist - I'm really hoping at some point in the future to do some sort of Silmarillion collaboration with her She's *very* good with Silmarillion scenes, I love love love the way she paints Fingolfin. To me that really is *the* image of Fingolfin, and most of her others are not far off the mark from how I think of those particular characters.

Its funny, from your pics I assumed you were a Tolkien heraldry mastermind - Fingolfin with stars, Fëanor's flames etc etc. I suppose it shows how sensible Tolkien's heraldic motifs were!

One day I'll take my heraldic stuff further - but I'm concentrating on trying to complete all the heraldic pages whenever I get a spare moment!

aautio In reply to elegaer [2005-11-11 00:31:47 +0000 UTC]

No prob.

Yeah, i think Jenny's Fingolfin is wonderful and definitely one of those characters who i see very similarely.. my image of him is maybe 5% more haughty with 10% less curly hair.. but that's pretty much the difference!

Funny, I think i've read every possible Tolkien related book, so i must have seen some of Tolkien's heraldry at least once, probably a long time ago.. But i really had completely forgotten it until i saw yours. True enough, his motifs seem to make sense.. I just used themes he mentions in the text or which can be derived from their names or that seem somewhat characteristic or fitting for their personality and deeds.. and some of those at least happen to be the "correct" ones.

I loved the idea. Thanks. You were right, it works very well.. I had the idea of colouring these some day when i get a tablet, but these are very much pencil pieces and perhaps not the kind that would look that good if coloured.. This might just be the perfect way to add more finished feel to them.

Now i did these second versions quite quickly so i might need to go back and fix some mistakes later.. but at least i got them all up now -- perhaps my inspiration will now allow me to sleep.

Hahahah! inspiration=insomnia, for sure

I don't agree with you, there are various ways of colouring elaborated pencils, I discovered it by myself, just adding few tones can make it look as a colouration. I make most of my pencil works like that, and digitally you can always turn back

Ok, i believe you.. I'll have to start experimenting once i've got that tablet. I was already going to buy one, but the good ones are pretty expensive.. and after giving it some thought i've also made a promise to myself that i won't buy one before i'm done with my thesis -- otherwise i'll never get it done!
