Now see, kids? This is textbook borderline sci-fi.Β Such an organic mechanism is entirely possible in our own Terran deep seas.

Bonus Multiplier: regular vents in the bell (both ventral and dorsal) to facilitate medium and thermal circulation.

Septimus-Oraka In reply to TheAtomicDog [2018-10-25 13:36:43 +0000 UTC]

This is how sci-fi should be made! I am so tired of "science fiction" works that use fantasy instead of science -- look at Arkane's "Prey" for example: aliens that are walking tar blobs able to magically turn themselves into chairs and trash bins?! since when this trash is "science fiction"?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

TheAtomicDog In reply to Septimus-Oraka [2018-10-27 23:22:44 +0000 UTC]

Remember that science explains at lot of what was once thought as "magical", and that indeed, much modern technology would be described as magical even a mere century past. Hell, I remember when the original Star Trek communicators were considered amazing futuristic tech, and look at the hand-held tech we have now.

"aliens that are walking tar blobs able to magically turn themselves into chairs and trash bins?! since when this trash is "science fiction"?"
Allow me: Tar blob = form-neutral protoplasmic state. Using sensory organs, Prey can reconfigure such form-neutral matter into the appearance of whatever they deem, within the limits of their own potential mass and energy.Β

Septimus-Oraka In reply to TheAtomicDog [2018-12-19 09:58:48 +0000 UTC]

Sorry, but I don't buy any of this rubbish. To me, aliens will always follow the laws of physics and biology as we know here on Earth. Aliens made of "form-neutral protoplasmic state" able to use pseudo-scientific "magic" to turn themselves into objects are rubbish of the worst kind -- the lazy and uninspired kind.

And no, I will never change idea about that stupid "Prey" made by Arkane -- the game I wanted was Prey 2 and if was not by Bethesda's greed back in 2011, that would be the game I would be playing by now.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

TheAtomicDog In reply to Septimus-Oraka [2018-12-22 20:24:34 +0000 UTC]

Organic adaptation is well and firmly within the laws of physics and biology as we know them, to date.Β  This is part of the evolutionary mechanism.
So many species on Earth has transformative abilities to ensure their survival, which is the inspiration for the idea of full scale shape-shifting in sci-fi which goes back generations. The Skrulls, the Durlans, the Salt Vampire, the alien from The Thing. And fundamentally, it should be considered no more magical than chameleons or myna birds or whatever other natural mimics might be cited.Β
And I am certain the races of galactic lifeforms we've yet to meet are entirely relieved that you've decided to set their biological limits for them.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Septimus-Oraka In reply to TheAtomicDog [2019-01-10 22:41:47 +0000 UTC]

I always found all those "transformative species" you quoted ridiculous. None of them make sense from a scientific point of view -- and I am tired of cheap "sci-fantasy". Give a me a sci-fi setting based in the good old common sense and science instead of some stupid story using fantasy, dumb "Space Magic" and that idiotic "Rule of Cool".

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

TheAtomicDog In reply to Septimus-Oraka [2019-01-11 00:39:14 +0000 UTC]

my point is that the 'transformative species' are imaginative extrapolations of those evolutionary demonstrations already observed here on Earth. And taking extant example and giving them extraordinary developments is a basis of all fantasy. And science-fiction IS fantasy. It's not supposed to be sensible and conservative, although it can explore what might one day be practical. Transporters, lightsabers, FTL engines, all kinds of E.T. species; stargates, giant robots, Dyson spheresΒ  Death Stars and TARDISes. None of this is REAL (as far as we know) but then it doesn't have to be. It's fantasy. Mere imaginings. And it might one day be proven real. And then their creators will join the ranks of such as Wells and Verne and be called prophets.

Do you not understand that the boundaries of science are not set in stone, but are given to constant expansion and correction?

Once upon a time, achieving a land-travel velocity of over 45 mph was declared to 'not make sense from a scientific point of view'.The same with building ocean-going vessels out of metal and heavier-than-air aeronautics. The telegraph-- anything tele-, really; audio-synched cinema; achieving touchdown on the moon. These were all dismissed as 'scientifically implausable' in their own eras. Guess what happened anyways?

Septimus-Oraka In reply to TheAtomicDog [2019-01-19 20:55:35 +0000 UTC]

Nature don't work through magic -- and I will never accept to see good science fiction being downgraded to the level of stupid, dumb fantasy. Telepathy, Telekinesis? yes. But dumb space magic like aliens able to magically turn themselves into humans, animals or objects? no, thanks! this kind of... thing has no place in the modern sci-fi -- not anymore. the time of dumb books like John Carter of Mars and similar trashes has ended ages ago.
