It was not that Damon was actively looking for a horse to buy...but as you do when you just check out the market out of curiosity,
sometimes a horse jumps right out the catalogue that you MUST have. He was captivated by the gorgeous seal bay,
every picture he found about him offered another angle to show off his beautiful, powerful build. It was like a DejaVu from the past.
He could hear his father's words when complimenting the muscular rump, elegant but sturdy looking legs, his noble head, just
the right curvature of neck and a more than attractive solid coat. Mawson, as the sales page listed his name, was a horse
that good old Leonid Voinovich would have LOVED to buy for his Admiralskaya refinement.

What surprised Damon, was the breed. An Australian Warmblood..but currently residing in a russian stable near Krasnodar.
Damon could not recall seeing a horse within this breed before, that appeared ..baroque almost. What an interesting lineage he must have.
But it made sense when he looked at some Walers. They definitely could have produced such offspring down the line, also with the
right amount of resilient. He was intrigued. Not only was he gorgeous but he had ridden in Grad Prix level dressage before - until he had a meadow accident.
Mawson was shorter than the height he preferred for dressage, and who knew if the accident he had would ever allow him to compete as well as he did before.
Then..there was a handicap that would likely make him a problematic breeding prospect AND show horse.
The condition came with stallion behavior on steroids and massive mood swings....
oddly that had Damon connect with him far more than making him remotely hesitant to buy Mawson.
He laid the thought aside, got busy with stable duties. Was trying hard to have his mind elsewhere.

On the third day the feeling of the initial spark grew to unbearable intensity. HE WANTED to get to know this horse.
The phonecall was made, the sellers seemingly happy to have a "native" show interest. Test riding would be in a couple days
and he couldn't wait to meet the fancy seal bay.

"You come with me" Damon stated to Vidar during dinner, the hungarian just staring at him mid bite into a crispy pork skin.
"What for?" he asked "So you can ignore the critique i'd have on the horse? You know i don't like typical warmbloods"
"The thing is, he is no typical warmblood. And yes, i quite like the validation of my own intuition by dismissing your reasons" Damon smiled. Was that sarcasm or honesty?
"Riiiight" Vidar made a face, but he joined him to Russia. It was a nice opportunity anyways to spend quality time with his BFF without Lyo around.
Not that he was jealous. But he liked to think since he knew Damon first, he should also definitely have a closer relationship with him what the hell.

While Damon was getting familiar with the Aussie,
Vidar was checking Mawson's documents, including the vet papers on his medical history and the shoulder injury. It felt like such a gamble.
Sure he was not lame, but the issues with his temper might cause to hurt himself easily again. A surgery due to cryptorchidism was still due.
Atleast it was adviced so. Or one puts a large sign around his neck at competition saying "I am No Gelding".
Damon was having a BLAST right away with Mawson. Loving his attitude and movement. There was something connecting about riding an as stingy asshole as you are.
Riding past the pastures, Damon quickly realized that all along, Mawson was being extra impressive - WHAT a show off. Wouldnt that come in handy at events?
He sure had a very stallionish way, absolutely a figure of authority and taking no shit. He was alert and while proud, still obedient to firm cues.
Vidar saw them approaching and thought he'd break the news about his opinion. "You look like you are riding a pony"
"So are you when you are on top of Mob, a very charming picture" Damon returned "Besides i do not think peter the great refrained from riding spanish horses only due to his height "
Vidar rolled his eyes "Oh you. Was reading that he has some awful behavior at times...what if he ends up crashing half of our pastures. And how does his shoulder feel?"
"It's not like i dont have space to have his own large paddock with a couple lady friends to keep him happy. Dyonisos and Alexandro did crash our paddock before remember?" he looked
at Vidar then continued "Didn't notice any hesitation to put his full weight on it" he blond returned "His trot is as smooth as the brain of a koala". "Not flattering for the koala.." Vidar watched
the pair move around on the open space in front of him. Sure, he had to give him that, he was moving beautifully. "What are your plans with him..?" he asked.
"I'll bring him to some shows and see how he's doing. If he enjoys it, what the judges think of us. And i definitely aim to pass on his gorgeous build" Damon petted Mawson

Closing the folder, Vidar decided to let go of his objection to that.
Who on earth would dare to tell a man who can't have kids, that the horse he is about to buy needs a miracle in the breeding department, it's not like he didnt know.
But maybe for him holding onto the minimal chance was a still a chance worth trying for. Mawson was a great horse regardless, taking everything into account, a very
bright career could lay ahead of him and an even brighter future if he indeed was placed into a paddock of mares to become his herd and long term breeding project.
Damon was HYPED to see this stallion in RPS gear, SO eager to have a horse of his stature on his team and perhaps be a good pas de deux partner to Vidar and Mob x)
Maybe this would shorten the break he'd have to take from Grand Prix as well... he yet had to figure out a deal with Rosendal regarding Lascivio - who was soon to retiring age as well.

About this horse:
Alert, Bold, Dominant. Mawson is very much a stallion in his mind, no matter his physical condition. He is pushy, arrogant and sensitive. He likes telling the world what he wants, and he expects it to listen. He has sharp reflexes and a quick mind, taking advantage of lapses in judgement or situations that allow him to get what he wants. This is not a horse that you can relax around and he requires experienced handling and training at all times. The best way to get him to work with you rather than against you is offering him respect but firm boundaries. He will respect you if you respect him. This goes for his ridden work too. He likes to test his riders and can be an absolute pain to work with, but once you do forge a mutual respect he will blow you away with his sensitivity and awareness. He is the kind of horse that seems to read your mind when you are in tune, shifting the quality of his work into the exceptional range that has taken him to the top of his discipline.

His movements are powerful, flashy, and with fantastic swing. He was bred and born to dance, and it is something that he excels at. He has fantastic knee and hock action, excellent suspension for such a powerfully built horse, and has fantastic extended paces. His biggest struggle is the more refined and controlled movements. Collection, Piaffes and Pirouettes are tough for him mentally and it does require a good connection to bring the best out of those movements. He also can be a handful at large events, especially around mares. There is normally some very athletic acrobatics in the warm ups or the first few outings at an event location before he settles down a bit, so it is recommended to travel with extra time to let him acclimatise at each event location.

Notes:
This horse has Unilateral Cryptorchidism where one of his testicles failed to descend. His descended testicle was removed as a young horse, however the descended testicle was left in his body which has caused ongoing behavioural and hormonal stallion development. He has severe fertility issues but it is possible he could successfully cover a mare, and so it is recommended that he undergoes surgery to remove the remaining testicle as it will continue to cause stallion like behaviours and is a congenital defect that could be passed onto any offspring.
