The slave trade has become a recurring foe in my group's campaigns, but every time they show up they are met with such cold calculated brutality that those who survive are never the same again. Especially if its my OC Goswen who finds them, a stiletto coated in white cobra venom between the ribs is about as merciful as she gets when dealing with slavers.Β

The funny thing is the group members who have the most power aren't who you would expect. One party member is queen of a small island nation but she is rather naive and idealistic and thus she can't truly fathom how much power the shadowy organizations in the world have. Meanwhile my character Goswen is just a commoner but after the events of our first campaign she joined the Selene one of the most feared assassin organizations in existence. This order has survived 1,000+ years and merely declaring "I am an agent of the Selene!" causes widespread panic. Thus she actually has a fair amount of power no matter where she is in the world whereas the queen only really has power in her homeland.
But even Goswen is small fry in the grand scheme of things... there are characters you read about in the lore book whose power is terrifying. For instance one of the big ancient kingdoms in the game that was known for its great scientific advances was literally wiped off the face of the earth in a single night by like 5 people if my memory serves me right. Another character after the death of his wife challenged death itself to honorable combat and won.... so death left him in the world and swore that it would never claim him.
Rule #2 of Anima: There is always someone scarier.

Yeah, super powerful NPCs can be scary. We had to fight a Sith lord at one point, and we were all SURE that at least one player character would wind up dead by the end of the session...but through sheer dumb luck, the Sith buttface rolled TERRIBLY and we managed to defeat him without losing anyone.

I know the feeling, in our latest campaign several party members were almost wiped out by a abomination know only as "The Zombie Bear Shark Shark." and no sooner had we recovered from that terrifying encounter then we ran into another undead entity that was pretty much 4 headed zombie Hercules. The results of that battle were disastrous, our martial artist was left with her entrails spilling everywhere, my necromancer was barely able to stand, the assassin had his arm broken, and another was left with a terrifying supernatural infection oozing up her leg.
And in our groups first campaign during the final battle I ended up being the last one standing (the others were just incapacitated) after a series of fights and had my mind taken over by a psychic, this psychic also conquered the minds of the 2 high level assassins that were with me and forced one of them to strangle me. I remember sitting there horrified as every trick I used, every destiny point spent to enhance my rolls, every supernatural power at my command..... utterly failed me. The only thing I rolled well for was my constitution check to see how long I could be deprived of the sweet oxygen I held so dear before blacking out and then dying Fate was with me however, even as my beloved Goswen's eyes dimmed and her vision faded to black we had already won. By sheer providence one of the NPCs we had befriended found us just in the nick of time... and it turned out she wasn't a simple thief like we thought but was in reality a skilled assassin... she broke the psychic over her knee like a twig. I was so relieved that my character was going to live that I almost cried.

indeed, and Goswen was only up against the slave trade.... now Markava is facing off against a demigod who is poised to become the new god of death.... the odds seem even more in the enemy's favor. The best part is if this god of death is born the world itself will die.. which means technically Goswen would die as well....... that though just dawned on me.... my anxiety levels just skyrocketed.
