Description

Here is my second personal scorecard. Not to mention, it’s my first one to be based on something that I have actual strong opinions about.

CONSPECTUS: “The Loud House” is a series set in the house of a family with 11 children. The children are as follows: Lori, the bossy firstborn; Leni, the fashionable ditz; Luna, the musician; Luan, the prankster; Lynn, the athlete; Lincoln, the middle child and only son; Lucy, the melancholy one; Lana, the muddy tomboy; Lola, the glamorous brat; Lisa, the cynical prodigy; and Lily, the baby. Rounding out the cast are the children’s Mom and Dad, and Lincoln’s friend and wingman Clyde. Most of the plot is Lincoln making plans to survive the chaos of the house. [NOTICE: conspectus outdated as of 2019. Revised conspectus is below.]

REVISED CONSPECTUS (AS OF SEASON 4): “The Loud House” is the collective title of eleven very loosely connected series, each one following the story of a different person, who are so loosely connected that I sometimes forget that they are siblings. There’s Lori, the young adult preparing for college; Leni, the retail worker; Luna, the LGBT one who sings for a band; Luan, the thespian with a love interest; Lynn, who’s still the athlete, but now the type who learns hard lessons about friendship; Lincoln, the leader of a friend group; Lucy, part of a mortician’s club, who learns not to be melancholy anymore; Lana, the pure and young activist for animal rights; Lola, who is learning the importance of not winning; Lisa, who is gaining the ability to feel emotional attachment; and Lily, who is fortunately still the baby. All eleven stories have half a dozen supporting characters each (listing all the names would take longer than watching an episode), Mom and Dad have a twelfth plot of their own, and the plots only intersect a few times per season.

HISTORY: I have been with this series since day one. I became a fan when I rationalized that watching the show would be the only way to keep track of the names of all the sisters. This has caused a lot of regretful moments and is regarded as a bad decision. I have been with this series for all the most terrible moments: I was there for the first episode that had sisters missing; I was there for the first episode without Lincoln; I was there for the first episode that was mostly lesson; I was there when Lori’s love interest Bobby, and his younger sister Ronnie, who incidentally is Lincoln’s love interest, moved away to their own spinoff. That was when I started hating this series.  This is actually the series that jump-started my series-reviewing career. I have reviewed this show in many ways ever since I was 12, but this is the first that was 100% accurate, and 100% described how I really feel.

REVIEW:

CHARACTERS: Everybody started out all right. They all had their thing and I liked it. However, as time progressed, the characters became much worse. Lincoln is sufficient to watch when navigating siblings, but less good as the head of a friend group. I feel sometimes that Lori is a little too authoritative, Lucy is a little too dark, and Lisa violates the laws of realism a little too much. Leni is funnier to me than Luan, due to the way she misunderstands… that is, when she’s not a patsy who’s too kind for her own good. Lana is intolerable, and watching her save animals and be so young and innocent and never get any consequences at all is hard to bear. Everyone has lost touch with their thing, some to a bigger extent than others.

PLOT: When this series had only one plot, it was actually very enjoyable. It was fast, tense but not to a fault, and comical. However, now that there are a dozen loosely connected plots, it is bad. At the end, I always feel like I am drowning in morals. However, old or new, the best episodes are the ones with all 11 siblings in them. The mood is fast and comical - no, it's sentimental and story-driven, which is a good - no, a bad feeling.

VISUALS AND AUDIO: The visuals are either there or they’re not. And when they’re there, they’re great. The audio is, obviously, loud. Just like with every series, the best audio is the singing. But there’s mostly nothing to say about either aspect.

FANS: The fans are divided into the fans who Approve and the fans who Disapprove. The Approvers spend their time making fan art, and the Disapprovers are set apart because they make fan fiction about alternate endings to the episodes that they thought were the most unfair. On a nerdometric scale of 0 to 5 (0 meaning every fan watches it for the art and 5 meaning every fan watches it analytically), this is a series of NERD-3 caliber, or moderate nerdiness. More than half of that score is the Disapprovers’ fault.

[There’s no Disadvantages section. Series that I Approve get a Disadvantages section, and series that I Disapprove get an Advantages section. Series that I only Tolerate get neither.]

SEASONS: The first three seasons were good enough to be bearable. The same cannot be said for season 4, which is when the series became… that. And then came season 5! Season 5 did the one thing animation isn’t supposed to do, by making the characters grow up. It seems to have recovered from its atrocious first few episodes, but it is still capable of producing incredible duds. That’s when I gave up on the series, and I’m not coming back. Season 6 is worse, but it does one thing better: there is more sibling bonding.

CONCLUSION: Despite how awful The Loud House is, it surprisingly has a lot of good or recommendable episodes too. This has its low low low low low low lows, but it has its highs too. This series could have been Fine, but the more recent seasons have reduced it to Normal. I do not recommend this series as a whole. Many of the episodes are recommendable, but seriously, stay away from this series.
