I liked it don't get me wrong...but the ammo it of drama and feelz were a bit much for my liking.

My short synopsis of free is as followed.

I'm pretty
I'm swimming

I feel like the first season handled the drama way better than the second season where pretty much no drama was coherent and you were like "okay???", even though I still sort of like how they handled Haru's struggles... But they shouldn't have had an entire episode between Haru's outbursts. Other than that though, it was fine.

Anyway, we should only concentrate on the first season for now because that's when the plot was the most coherent. The drama was also the most realistic? Like around ep6 when Mako got a panic attack in the middle of a storm in the sea because of his fear for water. Or when Rei felt left out because the rest of the Iwatobis only talked about Rin. Or just... entire Rin's drama?

Imagine wanting to pursue a dream, and you do so by going to another country where you practice really hard everyday. But even though you had confidence in yourself in your own country, suddenly you're one of the worst ones at it? And combined at the same time with a language barrier. Not only was Rin younger than me with three years when he went to Australia like when I went to England for only two weeks, but he was there COMPLETELY alone, no one else to speak japanese with, while I had my swedish friend with me in my host family. Even though I had that I still felt a bit miserable, since everything was more different than I thought. Just imagine feeling like that for /four/ years. I have no idea how Rin managed to put up with everything, but it's no wonder how he got depressed, and it's also understandable if he sees himself as a failure and want to shove everyone else away. Which was pretty much the plot of season 1, how Haru, Mako and Nagisa wanted to be with Rin again but Rin didn't let them. And in episode 7 he was going to "confirm" that they shouldn't care about him anymore and that he's fine on his own by saying what he said to Haruka. 

And oh my god don't even let me bEGIN with Haru and his character development just HOLY SHIT it's INCREDIBLE. Only by comparing him with his first scene in s1ep1 with s2ep13 is like having two different people, and that's also one of the great things about the character developments in free!. I guess it sorta goes for Rin too? But his character development was more like going from depressed to back to his old personality. Haru's character development was also a HUGE part why Rin managed to come back on track again in episode 12. Because even though he felt happy for a while after winning against Haru, his happiness didn't last long, especially not after Makoto and Rei told him what huge impact he'd had on Haru without him knowing it. So he felt like literal CRAP and lost really bad in that race, which worried the FUCK out of Haru since like Haru tried to tell him, Rin is the reason to why he found what he swims for. Which is Rin's old words "For The Team" like Haru wrote in the ground. When Rin saw Haru write his own words below a cherry tree similair to the one at their elementary school (WHICH RIN ONLY ATTENDED FOR THREE MONTHS LET ME REMIND YOU. THE FIRST TIME HE TALKED TO HARU AND MAKOTO AFTER TRANSFERRING WAS BELOW THAT TREE) the wall that threatened to burst did, which was why Rin cried and asked him why it didn't say "Free!", Haru's word, instead. Because during their whole fight Rin thought that Haru was going to say "I found that I swim for myself" and "I only swim free" like he usually do. It's not like Rin had hung out with Haru during that season except for the few times they swum against each other, so for Haru to such a 180° was completely unexpected for him.

I like to think that Rin would've cried even if he wasn't canonically a crybaby, because to put up so much struggles for 4 years without any friends, and then finally realized that there are friends there for you, is really something huge to digest just like that.

Anyway, I don't know if I only explained things you already knew, but I still think they divided the episodes perfectly during season 1, and all the feelings are THERE. Some people just decides to ignore important parts for their own selfish reasons (which also is why half the fandom ended up hating the guts of Rin while Season 1 still aired, even though they didn't consider for one second to see everything from his point of view ugh)
