Description
Much like the ice bucket- and cinnamon-challenges before it, the so-called “babysitter challenge” came out of nowhere only a few months before and has swept through the internet. The rules of this “challenge” are simple, the babysat first make a post on social media declaring their intention of winning the Babysitter challenge. They then have 1 hour to somehow tie their babysitter up in such a way that she cannot get free by herself and upload a picture of her struggling in order to prove it. Social media has been flooded with videos of those who have successfully completed the challenge and those who failed, along with tips and guides on the best materials to tie the babysitter up with, how to tie her up and ways to convince her to let you tie her up. According to one such guide posted by SitterCaptor0487:
“Don’t bother asking to play ‘cops and robbers’, they don’t fall for that anymore. Ask her to play wrestle with you and when she lets you win, grab her hands and get them behind her back. Start with tape first, you can usually find it in the garage or a junk drawer if you have one. Jump ropes are good for tying around the waist or the knees. If she’s making a lot of noise, just stuff a sock or two in there and tie a scarf over it. Your mom probably has some in her closet or you can find winter scarves with the coats and mittens...”
For the other side of the story, we spoke with Kristine, age 18, who regularly babysits her next door neighbor’s son and daughter. Kristine, who has been featured in three separate “babysitter challenge videos” said to us:
“The first time I agreed to it because I thought it would be fun and I’d get free no problem. Next thing I know, I’m tied up on the living room floor while the little twerps are standing over me doing Fortnite dances. I thought I’d die next day at school when I found out the video had gone viral. The second time, I said no, but after they’d been screaming for a full hour I had no choice. I was sure this time I’d be able to get free but they let me squirm the rest of the night while they ate all the ice cream out of the freezer.
Just last week, I put my foot down but it didn’t do me any good. I thought I’d gotten them to bed, lowered my guard. Next thing I know, they snuck up behind me, pulled a pillow case over my head and dragged me to the floor. They hogtied me up with jump ropes and spent the next twenty minutes tickling my feet and filming the whole thing. I’m supposed to watch them again this evening and I’m dreading finding out what they’ve got planned for me tonight.
However, this internet challenge is not all fun and games. There have been at least a dozen kidnappings carried out on homes shortly after the initial posts went live, leading authorities to believe one or more criminal groups are monitoring postings, tracing the videos back to the address and breaking in while the only adult is incapacitated. Fortunately, none of the children involved have been hurt, usually they have been locked in a bedroom or bathroom by the intruders while they rob the house. In every case so far they have also taken the babysitter with them. Thus far, no ransoms have been demanded for any of the missing babysitters and no bodies have been found. Authorities recently stated they have received new evidence in the case which leads them to believe the abductions are tied to a white slavery ring and that some or all of the girls may have already been sold and shipped out of the country.
