Description Obviously I didn't take this! It's a photo of my great-great-grandfather Thomas Hazelby (6/12/1847-30/5/1896), who worked on the railway and died by being crushed between the buffers at Abergavenny or Abertillery, South Wales. Any information anyone could give me on this engine would be great. It says 957 Crewe Works on it, but I know nothing else.
...
Just got this from the National Railway Museum -
The locomotive is a 0-6-2 tank locomotive designed by Francis Webb for the London & North Western Railway Company, the class were commonly known as β€˜Coal Tanks’ . 300 of the class were built at Crewe between 1881 and 1890 and the class had a long working life, the last of the class not being withdrawn until 1958. Only one member of the class has been preserved (No.1054) and that is currently located at the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway: [link]

For some reason that tank engine reminds me of Thomas.

Interesting Picture. I did a bit of searching and it appears to be a 0-6-2 tide tank geared shunter. I found a some what similar design here:
1892 #1336-1345 0-6-2, std gauge, Barry Dock #54-68 (15 loco's)
[link]

It seems like that was a pretty common design for that place/time. Sometimes you can find old information like this at libraries in old books. A lot of this old stuff doesn't make it on to the Internet.

I just got some information from the National Railway Museum on my tank engine - so it's identified now! I appended their reply to the picture.

thanks - this is really interesting! It does look similar, doesn't it, and it's from the right area of the country at least! So the search is narrowing down!

... whoa, that's kind of a gruesome way to go isnt it?

Well, first guess of mine would be that the train was some kind of small steam turbine engine, but seeing the dates I would excuse the idea because steam turbines at that time were, as Professor Professor would say "totaly untested and highly dangerous". I will certanly search a little more information about this train, partialy because I am not an expert and it might be fun searching this kind of stuff.

Well, I know this isn't the exact type of train, but it's the closest I could find at the moment, 6 photographs down.

Here's another picture of one that is almost EXACTLY like your mystery train. It's the 5th one down

Oh, and sorry for all the spam, I kind of get carried away with this kind of stuff.

that's all right - I get just as carried away! I did similar searches myself, but I don't think it can be the Lancashire and Yorkshire one, because that's a tender engine and doesn't have the right wheel arrangement either - according to my dad it's an 0-6-2 engine. And it should be a Welsh or Western company, I imagine. The second one you found looks the most similar. Thanks for having a go!
