Description Monument Valley straddles the border between Arizona and Utah and is located on the vast Navajo Nation. It is best known for it's "monuments", or huge stone pinaccles and buttes. Monument Valley is essentially not a valley, but rather a plateau. The tops of the monuments mark the level of an ancient plateau, which long ago, cracked, crumbled, and eroded away, leaving only the monuments. Most people think of monument valley only as the three "mitten" buttes at the visitors' center, when really the park covers a vast area with hundreds of spires and buttes, and many natural arches as well, most of which can only be seen on a guided tour. The 17-mile loop through the valley is quite beautiful, and passes some of the best known monuments, but for the really good shots, it is necessary to take a guided tour.

This is one of the more famous shots in Monument Valley, so I decided to add my own little twist with the tumbleweed. Yes, I cheated and put it there...
I had another shot of this with the tumbleweed in the sun, and the exposure was a little better (less dark), but the color was not as rich and the shot did not have that nice light graduation in the dunes, so I chose this one.

My stepfather and I woke up at about 4:30 or so and made the 45-minute drive from Kayenta, AZ, to Monument Valley for a sunrise tour. The tour was quite incredible, and we saw sights that you would never even dream of seeing on the scenic loop.

The colours are gorgeous. I also love the ripples in the sand, so undisturbed. Getting up that early must have been worth it.

Sand dunes are incredibly photogenic, you should shoot them sometime!

By the way, I see you live in Dubai. I have a friend who lives there and he absolutely loves it. How do you like it?

The tumbleweed and the rich colors really make this shot. This is a place I want to visit. Thanks for sharing!

Anytime

It was quite incredible, being there in the near-dark before sunrise, and seeing how the light changed as the sun came up over the horizon and just made everything come alive. Pre-dawn is by far my favorite time of day anywhere.

Great cheating. I think the tumbleweed in the shade makes it more interesting that if it would be all sunlit. I can see how it was dragged from the lower right. Incredible colours, for sure.

Funny you say that, because I have a shot of this about 10 minutes later when the shadows receded past the tumbleweed, and it loses some of the visual impact of the photograph. Thanks for commenting!

I do see what you mean about the dragging of the tumbleweed. I should have seen that, but hey, I don't like to clone, so I'll keep it as it is

Indeed it looks good just as it is, I just thought it was curious to see your action in the scene.

i think you would have been better off without the tumbleweed

I tried without and it needed something for the foreground. I was going to get the classic shot with only a dune in the foreground and just the top of the totem sticking up [link] , but I would have needed to trek for a mile or so to the REALLY big dunes, and that would have lost me my light...

Very, very nice. You really found a great spot for this shot. For a photographer, MV is like being a kid in a candy store, isn't it?
