I'm actually about to go out of town for the next week, and I have a fair amount of scribbles - from notebook doodles to works in progress - that I've shared over on tumblr, but not here. So to make up for the following week's inactivity here is a doodle dump of said scribbles. I tried to number-code them to make it a bit easier to tell which doodle I'm referring to in the description. Watch out, there is a massive textwall ahead!

1 - this one started out as me trying to figure out what Astro's back looked like. And then it turned into a weird little comic-type thing. The fuzzed out text is just some design notes I made.

2 - this one is just plain silly and happened in my notes one day when I remembered a certain post over on tumblr. Here let me link it. I got the idea that Shockwave collects any and all documentation of various life forms from various planetary systems and time periods. For reference material and possibly entertainment purposes. I actually own the two books that I bothered to label, which are essentially speculative zoology, one based on Earth creatures some several million years in the future [After Man: a Zoology of the Future, by Dougal Dixon] and the other a completely fabricated alien world [Expedition, by Wayne Douglas Barlowe]. Needless to say they provide some awesome inspiration for examples of creature concepts done right; covering visual designs and abilities and mechanics and all that fun stuff. And a wild Astro appeared in the empty space between notes. Boooo. Well I almost did another Shockwave on his back but that would have been a little repetitive so it wound up being an Astro instead.

Also! The tiny doodle that later became this . Though here it's so vague that it's hard to tell the two are related.

3 - I have mentioned this guy here and there and people on tumblr are familiar with him but this is the first dA is seeing of him. Basically.. I caved and appropriated my violin mantis character Vaschel into a TF character. Now named Varistor, and now based in appearance on an Idolomantis diabolica rather than a violin mantis. He is yet another Astro project, genetically somewhere between Insecticon and normal Cybertronian - basically he was Frankenstein'd together in a lab, some body parts being engineered and grown separately before being grafted onto the main body. His face does have the ability to "come off" and reveal his Insecticon face underneath. I'm working on a proper reference but I guess I'll talk a bit more about him here?

Varistor has no altform - because mantids are very close to humanoid in body structure anyways, and also so that he can't be crippled by injury to / removal of the transformation cog. We all saw how that went down when Bumblebee and then Starscream got theirs stolen by M.E.C.H.

He has a jet engine for an "abdomen". He can fly using wing propulsion, but he only does that at lower speeds / when he needs to hover. Otherwise he just uses his wings for steering. He has very mild transforming abilities, like the ability to transform his forearms [the larger set at least] into simple guns. His biggest "special ability" is his acid reserves. His smaller forearms, fingertips, mandibles alongside his face, and the tibia of his larger forearms [an image of mantis arm anatomy for anyone that doesn't know what that means] , are hollow and have small holes in the tips where he can eject a form of acid that was inspired by spider venom - most spiders deliver a bite to their prey and then sit back while the insides of their prey are dissolved and turned into mush. Varistor finds the main energon arteries of his "prey" - which is something Astro programmed him to be able to do instinctively - and jabs whatever body part is most convenient into it, and injects the acid directly into the energon stream. The acid then travels along that main "highway" very quickly and corrodes everything it touches.

Unfortunately for Astro, outside of the instincts Varistor has, he is very childlike in personality and acts like a little kid in many respects. Probably because he's not a proper clone, and it's implied in the TFP universe that when something is cloned, the clone has the personality / memories / maturity of the original. He's very curious, easily entertained, surprisingly docile outside of the field of battle, and likes to sing. That one happened by itself. In my head his singing voice sounds like Jonsi, the lead singer of Sigur Rós. So he's doesn't quite measure up to the expectation of a predator that Astro built him to be.

4 - Varistor got quite the amount of attention over on tumblr and lots of people stated how much they liked him. More than I anticipated. So I drew that in response.

5 - A notebook doodle that I am working on completing. Varistor being ridiculous and cavity-inducing. Also an excuse for me to show off his wings.

6, 7 - I'm lumping these together because they're very similar. So I have a problem where my characters run off, become their own personalities, and do things without my consent. This time around it involved Torque meeting Murelock. And despite them being on opposite sides they kind of. Well. Apparently they're involved now. Though Murelock's very straight-faced and won't admit to anything about it whereas Torque isn't shy about it at all. Also, the first doodle is not an accurate height representation. Torque is much shorter and only comes up to about his hip.

8 - Torque has a tooth-gap! ..or. Denta-gap. Whatever term you want to use.

9 - Another work in progress. Featuring Murelock and Torque being stupid together. They're probably skipping out on responsibilities and just chilling somewhere.
