One of the leading characters of the Anime series Neon Genesis Evangelion and my favourite character from the series, Eva pilot Asuka Langley is initally abrasive, harsh, vocally self confident, and curiously likeable.Like most of the cast of this particular anime series, she has her hangups. In spite of being very chatty and vocal, she can't say what she truly feels, mirroring the lead male character Shinji, who also is unable to express himself, although he is generally apathetic and reluctant where she is proactive and aggressive, both using their respective facades to limit being emotionally hurt ( that is my general opinion on those two characters anyhow ) .
As the series progresses her buried insecurities slowly eat away at her ego until it nearly shatters from a violent psychic attack from one of the mysterious 'Angel' entities.

Hm, I understood in the series that they helped in processing brain waves or something like that, which is why Rei and Shinji wear them when they're in their respective plugsuits too. Unless I'm mistaken?

Ok, joking aside, you know how I felt about that particular series and what a desert of unlikable asshat characters (with an occasional cactuslike likable person that was more or less assured to wind up dead because they were bucking the whole introvert, frustrated wristcutter, never getting laid in a month of sundays, smarter than thou vibe it was rolling in like a pig in shit) I found it... I might have to go back and watch it again sometime. I'll have to be very drunk though or I'll be throwing crap at the tv and yelling. Good work though, man
Yanno, you really should watch Black Lagoon... that has some fantastic femmes in it - and even the one that loves slicing people up with a chainsaw is deeply loveable.

You know I'm kinda picky with anime in general... I mean, I have this very small, sheltered worldview that has Cowboy Bebop, Lucky Star and Haruhi in it and not much else. I let Black Lagoon in there too. It's that good - it has action, moral ambiguity, comedy, horror, and more gunfights than you can shake a stick at.
And there are a lot of interesting female characters; visually I don't think there's a series I've seen before with so many different looks... it's certainly the only place outside a beat-em-up game where you can find a chainsmoking nun, a scrappy in cutoff shorts, a glasses-girl maid, a gothic lolita with a massive chainsaw who talks with a voicebox, a dragon lady and a big bosslady with scars all in one place and they never feel like they're out of place or comical.

On the flipside to both your opinions and the previous comment Asuka was a character that klicked with me initialy on my first viewing of the series (1995 series) but upon a second viewing last year I LOATHED WITH A PASSION. The TV series (and EoE) depict her as selfish, self rightous, mean, unpleasent and crude and this is never rectified at all in the series...HOWEVER! The Rebuild series show's a MUCH improved incarnation of Asuka and is indeed one of the redeaming factors of that film franchise, an instance in which Remake is superior to initial product. She's also a more likeable character in the NGE manga and alt. universe series Campus Apocalypse.
In parallel to what WorstPlayer has said I think Asuka has made the transition in style VERY well indeed. As your an artist who typicaly focuses on the American or British/ European market it's great to see a more refreshing spin on the classic plugsuit design. And 'too Japanese'? Physicaly speeking Asuka has alway appeared more European to me than the other cast (as is her heratige) so the slight mould to her face is befitting. I approve of this and it is indeed a very good piece.

True, Asuka is a character who tries her best to infuriate, i did say she was abrasive and harsh which i admit is a polite way to describe her
I wanted to give my take on the character rather than try and directly imitate the original art style, i decided to make the plugsuit look a little more rigid, like armour. Thanks

I've been an anime fan for a while, among some of my favourite anime titles are Macross Plus the Movie, the original Bubblegum Crisis, the original Sol Bianca, Cybercity Oedo, Daphne in the Brilliant Blue, the first season of Tenchi Muyo!, Golden Boy, Outlaw Star, The first season of the Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, Ghost in The Shell Stand Alone Complex, Evangelion, Detonator Orgun, and most of the output of Studio Ghibli.

A bit of a 90's buff, eh? Can't blame you. In an age where most of the out put was dire across the median, the great examples shine even brighter. Surprised Cowboy Bebop was not listed, it may be cliche to call it the best anime ever, but it fit's in with everything else on the list. I would love to see you do some Outlaw Star fan art.

If I was to write up a list, it would probably include CB, Rebuild of Evangelion, Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, Revolutionary Girl Utena, Bleach and One Piece (guilty pleasures), D.Gray-Man, Trigun, Outlaw Star, Berzerk (Movie series), Claymore, Excel Saga (Hehe..i'm going to hell), Samurai Champloo, and Fist of the North Star OVA.

About your picture, your plugsuit design looks like an armor, and the face definitely is not Asuka's face. Some characters lose their features when transported to other styles, and my fan art drawings are a text book-like example of that. In conclusion: I like your style, because it's very American, but you chose a character that is too Japanese.

I did decide to make the plugsuit look a bit more solid and inflexible like armour, i'm glad that was noticed.
I wanted to draw my own version of the character, in my style but still resembling the character ( although admittedly i think she does look older than 14 in my picture, and she looks happier than she normally does
