What strikes me the most about Adam Hughes style is how well the painterly realism of the skin tones goes with the simplified hair rendition. I think the principle is that if you focus on the overall dynamics of the locks, you don't need to draw every single strain to achieve a good effect. Hughes can do it using just two tones, which is a fantastic and extreme demonstration of the concept. Gotta study his artworks much more.

Mr. Hughes,
Is there, or was there a woman(actress/Model) that has influenced your style of drawing them? The Women you draw have attributes and features, that I too, find very attractive. I guess I just wanted to know, was their a particular person that influenced you style.
I really love your work. Look forward to seeing more of it when it comes out.

AdamHughes In reply to luber86 [2009-08-05 17:22:40 +0000 UTC]
Sorry about the delay in responding; San Diego Comic-Con is a time vampire.
I use the basic principles of color theory to help me decide the color's I choose for my palettes.
I know colors compliment other colors well, and what color combinations look bad.
I pick a main color that will be part of the most important part of the composition, and then I make my following color choices using the principles of sound color theory.
Here's an example:
If I am doing a Catwoman cover, and I want the focus to be her face, I will do her face in reds, pinks, oranges... all warm colors. When I coloring the highlit parts of her black costume, I have to pick a hue for the them. Even though it is a black costume, it still has a color temperature. Well, if want her overall body to be part of the focus, I will pick warm colors for those highlight. If I want her face to pop out & grab your attention, I would render the colors in a nice complimentary hue - say a very neutralized green ( basically a gray with a greenish hue or tint).

I see you using the pencil tool. (You might have already answered this question 5 billion pages back.) But what use could be used of the pencil tool that the brush could not already do?

AdamHughes In reply to TheCosbinator [2009-05-13 06:35:46 +0000 UTC]
Nothing really, except you don't have to worry about turning the hardness down, or accidentally scrolling through your brushes to a brush preset with a soft brush edge.
