Description Here's a detail from my February 2009 PLAYBOY illustration. It was fun doing a classic glamour face!

I started with a tonal gray illsutration, pencil & marker on sketch paper. I then scanned it into Photoshop, and colored her up!

I've been trying to get my work published in playboy for years, I keep getting no response at all. were you rejected a lot before you were published? (actually in general? I haven't been able to get a single freelance job ANYwhere)

How do you get such realistic variation in the skintones on her hands? I know you are a bad ass MF when it comes to drawing...but you are still human, right? Do you get a girl to pose with her hands like that...or you just make it up? It's impressive all the same. What are your thoughts on using reference?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

AdamHughes In reply to Nortenyo [2009-03-14 04:56:09 +0000 UTC]

I just looked at some hands (probably mine, minus a few pounds). I think that using your eyes is an artist's best tool, so reference is OK as long as you are learning from it.

Thanks for the tip. I have watched you draw on youtube or something like that...did you ever go to figure drawing workshops?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

AdamHughes In reply to Nortenyo [2009-03-14 18:58:40 +0000 UTC]

No, not yet. I just practice at home, USUALLY when working on assignments.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Nortenyo In reply to AdamHughes [2009-03-28 18:59:37 +0000 UTC]

I can draw from photos, but you go beyond that skill...you make things look better than photos. That said, and given you don't draw from life, I'm assuming you practice from photography. What are some pitfalls to avoid when doing that? Sometimes I have a hard time translating photographic sources into beautiful line work...which you make look effortless.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

AdamHughes In reply to Nortenyo [2009-03-29 04:07:50 +0000 UTC]

Well, I think the trick is work FROM the reference, and not DRAW THE PHOTO. Any thing that helps you in your work: reference, a ruler, a really comfy chair - shouldn't run the show! Look at reference and see what little nuances exist that you weren't aware of (a trick of light, a fold of clothing, whatever) and work it into YOUR style. Treat reference as a guy on the streetcorner whispering racing tips in your ear like a racing tout, and NOTHING MORE. Meaning, reference should be advice, not a STRICT SET OF INSTRUCTIONS.

I know that sounds vague. In practice, do this: don't draw from the reference. Draw, freehand, what you want. And then, take your reference and go back and fix what doesn't look right to you. That way, you retain the dynamic quality of your freehand drawing, but the final art has all the little 'touches' that help sell it.

I hope that helps!

Most definitely AH! I do find your wisdom very helpful to finding my own voice. I have never had anyone describe using reference that way...a guide more than a map.
