Description creature illustration for a cghub challenge to create a sky crawler. it breathes in air and stores them in sacs in its carapace and along its tail to keep afloat in the atmosphere. exhaling creates thrust and its long tail is used for direction. part of the challenge was to imagine how it would [at least] semi-realistically live in the sky.

i don't think this piece is all that good, and it didn't do well overall in the challenge, but i kinda liked the creature, even though it feels more like a sky barge than a sky crawler.

This is the kind of thing I'm aiming to get into, so faving for inspiration I'm interested to know how you learnt about the name for the anatomy (carapace). Whereabouts do you look for that sort of info?

try wikipedia or books on crustaceans and bugs. i learned it from warhammer 40k. the army i built was a race of evil space bugs and in the rule books they mentioned the parts of their anatomy, as like a guide for painting the miniatures.

It's a cool idea. Makes a lot of sense, so it's something that could really exist out there somewhere. A sort of sky whale. I wouldn't worry about the crawler/barge thing. How does anything crawl through the sky anyway?

As for the actual image, the light shining through the membrane in the tail looks really nice. My only criticism would be that at first I thought the setting was space, rather than the atmosphere of a planet (I know, I should read titles...). The really high contrast and those spots of dust strewn about probably made me think that.
