Description Made some Who-vian stencils and spent a lot of time yelling at them for a friend's birthday present. Seriously. I will never try to do something as fiddly as this TARDIS stencil again.

I should probably mention that the TARDIS is printed on the back of the hoodie, and that there are indeed pockets on the front. Because a hoodie without pockets is just plain pointless.

Basic stencil-making method, for anyone who cares:
1. Make up image in photoshop, and print.
2. Trace onto clear plastic (I use film, because I have a heap of it lying around).
3. Kill yourself by cutting out the relevant outy bits (being sure to use a ruler and a sharp blade in your handy-dandy stanley knife).
4. Use tape and stitching to affix stencil to item of clothing.
5. Stick a board between the layers of whatever (in this case, between the front and back of the jumper) and apply the fabric paint. I do one layer at a time, and usually leave two-to-three hours for each layer to dry before applying to next. And then leave at least 24 hours for it to dry enough to wear.
It's probably also a good idea to run your hand along the inside of the clothing after each layer has dried, to see if any of the paint has bled through.

ETA: I put the stencil up in my scraps: [link]

This certainly isn't the most sure-fire way to do it, but it works for me. If you read through the comments there are some other really good hints and suggestions.

what did you put on the front of the hoodie?

adams-ransom In reply to heathyboo [2012-01-28 09:24:38 +0000 UTC]

I only just noticed this comment now - sorry for the late reply! The front of the hoodie was blank, but because of the position of the word TARDIS it never looks like just a plain jacket when worn. From memory, the girl I gave it to put some related badges on the front

adams-ransom In reply to heathyboo [2011-09-12 05:05:49 +0000 UTC]

I left it blank. TARDIS down the arm was pretty eye catching all on it's own, and I figured the wearer could fix buttons or whatever on the front if she wanted to.

I'm going to make this :-D For the words I'm going to try writing them in glue or something that desolves in water, then paint over. When I wash it the words will show I think lol

I love this! So cute!
I think I might have to make one of my own.
The fabric paint doesn't fade in the wash, then?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

adams-ransom In reply to NoOtherRoad [2010-07-19 01:01:45 +0000 UTC]

I haven't had any problems with fading, but I used a million layers of paint on this. You need to leave the paint until it's totally dry (I recommend about 48 hours minimum after the last layer goes on). Some colours might fade in sunlight... I more have issues with peeling and cracking of the paint than fading, but I used an uber cheap brand.

If you make one, let me know how it turns out, and be sure to send me a pic

I'll definitely have a go at that! Thinking a t-shirt maybe... but I own so many geeky t-shirts already... Bag? Maybe on my blue guitar... TOO MUCH CHOICE! XD

adams-ransom In reply to Rubiconia [2010-05-12 11:23:39 +0000 UTC]

DO THEM ALL!! It looks good on a bag, but on the other hand, I'm yet to see it on a guitar...

Rubiconia In reply to adams-ransom [2010-05-12 11:24:44 +0000 UTC]

Hehe, it would be cool. I might try it out on a bag before trying it on the rather expensive guitar. XD

lillylw [2010-01-20 02:09:38 +0000 UTC]

Woah that is really great!
How did you trace it onto the plastic/film from your computer? And what kind of plastic do you mean?
I've tried this before, but my stencil didn't really work out. I tried cutting it out on cardboard but it was an epic failure.
Thanks!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

adams-ransom In reply to lillylw [2010-01-20 04:27:06 +0000 UTC]

I printed out the design, and put some clear film over it and traced with a permanent marker. You can buy sheets of it for printing overhead projector stuff onto at any newsagent, or you can use any clear plastic you have lying around, so long as it's thick enough that it won't break, and thin enough that you can cut it.

Oh lawdy. I'm only vaguely familiar with Doctor Who, but I'd wear this in a heartbeat (score some geek cred CHYEAHH~). Something about text on the arms always looks so stylish, and the graphics themselves are also pretty awesome.

It's a great hoodie. Great job!

Will do!

I have a thought: do you think it would be easier to print the stencil directly onto the film? For cutting purposes?

I have decided to make this my summer project!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

adams-ransom In reply to yesterdayzchild [2009-06-05 06:18:31 +0000 UTC]

I have no doubt that would be a lot easier than what I did, I just didn't have access to that kind of crazy tech at the time. But most photocopiers can do it, so now I really have no excuse. Someone also suggested printing onto a giant sticker, so the stencil sticks in place while you're adding the material paint.

yesterdayzchild In reply to adams-ransom [2009-06-05 19:12:08 +0000 UTC]

Awesome!
I completely understand! I've just done a lot of printing on transparencies, so I thought "hey, that might work"!

The hard part is finding the blue hoodie!

But thanks for the info!
