I bet that in first episode of season 4 what is continuation of season 3 finale, this is exactly what will happen when Twilight realize that she just got her wings and do not know how to use them to well while she is already in the air.
Poor Twilight, she is so much going to crash into something, on the other side, she is very tough and as Alicorn she is even tougher, so crashing into something or falling from heigh will hardly do any damage.

I kind of expected this. Um, since alicorns are the combination of earth ponies, pegasi, and unicorns, wouldn't they be too bulky to fly? I mean, earth ponies are meant for the ground, so would they be too heavy?

I'm not sure, actually. I assume earth ponies would be built more for strength than for body-mass. Meanwhile, pegasi must maintain very light bones and an overall low mass density to lift themselves up easier. The expanded wingspan of an alicorn along with their slender body may then ease the effort required for flight. Pegasi are also able to walk on clouds, a trait not shared by the other races unless through magic, so this implies that magic may also be a factor in pegasi flight. We know that alicorns are supposed to be very powerful with magic, so they may be able to maintain the conflicting traits of earth ponies and pegasi through its help.

She was, but she have alot study to do, study and practice, and what kind of practice it is without some crashing and falling ?
A boring practice, thats what, but for Twilight it is not big deal, she is used to have something heavy fall on her, being smashed by door, having killer beez attacking her, falling on very loooooong stairs in Crystal Empire, so a few crashes into rocks until she learn how to fly is not big deal to her ( to be honest, she is perfect Alicorn material, I mean, what other pony will be so willing to learn about new powers and flying and accept crashing into rocks like our good Twilight ).
