A recently unearthed illustration dating back to 1997 that was, I believe, intended for use in a doujinshi of some sort; pretty sure the piece never saw print, though.Anyhoo, the characters depicted are "Devil Kei" and "Angel Yuri," virtual-reality iterations of the Lovely Angels who appear in bad guy Kevin Sleet's "harem simulation" in SimHell,ย my fourth Dirty Pair miniseries (presently out of print, alas).

Since we've hurtled back to 1997, i had a question; the character of Shasti, the bioroid enemy (once ally) of Kei and Yuri, what inspired her design when you drew her? (Sorry for the very random ask, but I remember her collected issue first appearence being the book that really kickstarted my love of Dirty Pair and anime in general and I was always curious about inspiration, etc as she's your original character for the series)

Your original dirty pair series is not only one of my most favourite comics of all time, but also one of the most formative. I think I must have tried to redraw Kei & Yuri a million times.

This did make it into a book somewhere...I gotta go look for it now. I just don't remember if it was a DP book or it was in another Dark Horse publication.

Interesting to see how your style evolved over the years.ย The figures
and the lines used to draw them seem a bit simpler here, and nowhere
near the range that you use in your current work.ย There's something
more evoking of the anime influences in these, too.
I might've recalled seeing this at one of the big anime conventions on
the East Coast (probably Otakon), but I stopped going after 1998 due
to some prior commitments at home and changes to the convention's
attendance policies at the time.ย I'm a bit out of the loop on the conven-
tion circuit these days.ย Seems like the Internet did more than just kill
the old mail-subscription fan clubs.

SERIOUSLY I was just mentioning DP's SimHell to my husband less then an hour ago. @.@ It came up in conversation due to a D&D game we're playing right now (a note in the published game about somebody wanting to make clones of the characters for a harem, and I jokingly brought up SimHell).

I loved SimHell...ย It was neat on so many levels, including the backstory explaining why "Nanotech" hadn't made a "Future" far different than the more cliche "Starwars meets Cyberpunk" one in the story.
Frankly, could you use Kickstarter to fund some of your neat comics ideas!?ย I'd toss in $100+ (my image in the background reward, part of a crowd?) to have another "Dirty Pair" or that "Blood of the Magi" thing...?

A Plague of Angels is, in my opinion, the best-looking American manga ever drawn. With Sim Hell a close second.
