Decided to go a new direction for this one. Was feeling a little tired of the typical archer poses, so I thought "What is it that makes Hawkeye who he is?" And I recalled the thing people seemed to be loving so much about his recent solo series was that it emphasized how much he's just a regular guy.

Thus, this fun piece. I really enjoyed doing it largely because it was such a different kind of thing than the usual.

(Oh, and in case you can't read it, his coffee mug says "World's Averagest Avenger"

Yeah,... a regular guy who can shoot techno-arrows like Legolas. It's like saying Batman just an ordinary Joe... with lots of money. Awesome pic, man!

The difference is how he's portrayed. Hawkeye is actively written to be a regular sort of guy: down to earth, not much money, living in a small apartment with his dog, and happens to also be an amazing archer that runs with the Avengers. That's the duality that defines his character.

Whereas Batman has all the super-powers that any of the Justice League have, they just PRETEND he's a regular human. Batman's superpower is "BECAUSE I'm BATMAN!!!" No matter what situation he's in, he's never in any real danger BECAUSE HE'S BATMAN!!!

That makes sense. Clint Barton, who goes home to his dog, versus billionaire Bruce Wayne, who makes headlines just because he showed up to charity event or a football game and drives the tabloid journalists crazy with wondering what he's up to. Clint's definitely the more regular guy in that scenario.

I love both characters because they embody the idea that mostly ordinary people can be extraordinary and set their own rules, no official super powers required. I think Batman creates his own superpower. Who else can make humans and superhumans, both heros and villains alike, pause in fear? Not Supes, not J'onn, not Diana... the list goes on, because there's only one FREAKING BATMAN.

You know, he probably really does have a mug that says that. A birthday present from Tony Stark.

Because Tony Stark's the kind of smug douche that would get that gift for him as a joke, and Hawkeye's the kind of cool guy that would take it and love it because hell yes he is.

Just your basic human, no powers, but he hangs in there with gods, monsters and super-soldiers. How can anyone not appreciate that?

Seriously. There should always be room for regular joes doing awesome stuff in comic teams.
