Description A commission I did for a guy who wanted Ion. Me, I didn't care much for the Ion story with Kyle, but I LOVE Kyle Rayner. So to keep myself excited for the commission, and because I didn't think the guy would mind, I turned it into a Rayner Retrospective.

I'm not completely happy with how it turned out. I could have done a more interesting main pose, I think. But it isn't bad... just not all it could have been.

Kyle Rayner is the best Ion. Sodom Yat is boring. Kyle's Black and Green look (which he wore in GL: Rebirth) is my favorite look for him, personally. As for Kyle himself, he's definitly a favorite. I did two different drawings of him. One of him as a Green Lantern, and another one of him re-envisioned as a Red Lantern. Wound up selling the former along with a few other drawings so I could get enough money to go to Washington DC.

And personally, I think you're a little too hard on Marvel and DC. There's plenty of good stuff coming out right now, although I am starting to agree that resurrection is way over-used. Bucky's comeback as Winter Soldier, however, was a stroke of genius. Jason Todd's resurrection was awesome too. Seeing as how both characters sucked as sidekicks and all, it's nice to see them come back and start being written well.

Amazing! I really love the colouring and lighting effects. I also like the main pose, but to be honest I'm still finding my feet with "profile style poses", so anything beyond what I can do is awesome in my eyes

I also second what you said about the Jim Lee (or "Post-Ion" as I called it) costume being his best so far. I can't say I noticed the collar until you mentioned it, and to be honest was dissapointed he didn't go back to it after losing Ion for the second time.

Great job on my favourite superhero to date

Thanks a lot. As for Kyle's current costume, I'd like it a lot more if he had the big white symbol in the middle of his chest. Everything else can stay the same, but I really don't like the little symbol crammed to the side of his torso. It feels odd on such a symmetrical costume, even though I know it's supposed to recall his original look.

Meh. I'll keep drawing him the way I want. Nobody can stop me! Bwah ha ha!

I hadn't thought about that. I actually like the idea. I really like his revision of the emblem and while I can understand trying to streamline him to fit in with the rest of the corps, I still fel he deserves some of his own individuality due to his history.

Then again, considering his history with costumes, he might get a new one or five soon

I assume you're quite busy with the work on your comic series, Uniques, but I had a question.

I could be wrong on the definition of "commission", so I'll put it plainly:

I was wondering if you could do a few requests? Is commission the right term here? I'm very intrigued by your work, and the style in which it is done, and have a few ideas on what I need, but I don't want to have you overload, especially with the comic.

Let me know if you'd be willing to do this, and if there would be payment involved. I do greatly appreciate it.

By the way, great work. I like this portrayal of Ion, and Scout is one of the coolest-looking sidekicks I've ever seen.

Thank you for all your work.

Kyle's always been the best!
Personally I didn't like all the Ion stuff, I think he's more a down to earth guy, that's why I loved the second costume the best.
But you're right saing Ion II was a good mix of his looks.
Great job anyway dude!

It wasn't intentional (he's actually of Irish lineage, I do believe), I just remember that he always had a more olive complexion in the early comics. Tried to get some of that in here.

Ah the lovely Ion II costume, probably the most balanced of the whole lot considering how many different duds the guy has had in his career.
I wish the damn thing had been kept a lot longer, but how things have been handled as of late regarding him it wasn't meant to last.

I would like to know why the guy is now wearing Jordan's costume with his crab mask on.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

AdamWithers In reply to Robotbot [2007-12-29 16:52:30 +0000 UTC]

I personally liked the second Kyle costume - the Jim Lee one. It had its problems, like the horrifically stupid dog-collar and those clunky boots and the wierd ribbing on the arms and legs, but it had some really iconic elements as well.

The current costume looks like an attempt to blend all his looks at once, but there are still problems. First, the logo to the side looks awkward and unbalanced, and secondly NOBODY can draw the crab mask and make it look good. It's a neat idea, but undrawable from more than one angle.

I didn't really care for the Ion costumes, personally. At least Ion II had some decent appearances, though - there was one issue of the Ion mini with a guest-artist who actually made me like the thing. Then the regular guy came back and I was nonplussed again It's impossible to please an artist!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Robotbot In reply to AdamWithers [2007-12-30 01:16:42 +0000 UTC]

It really depends on the artist doesn't it? I can't expect to see Baigley, Aja, Immonem or whomever did the SS: Requiem mini to be available for everything. Hell some artist (and writters) are really a hit with one particular character or team than with almost everything else.

But if you got a top tier artist he will tend to make almost everything work well.

I liked the Ion II costume because it looks a bit more balanced, the green areas remain at the top and gradually dissappear near his chest until the rest remains black save for the belt for the ease of placing his hip.

And I'll throw my glove to declare that the crab mask is a neat idea, but not impossible to draw. Everyone I ever saw take a stab at it makes it big and bulky, practically swallowing Kyle's face, what they need to do is just give it the dimensions of the typical domino mask.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

AdamWithers In reply to Robotbot [2007-12-30 19:18:30 +0000 UTC]

The biggest problem with the crab mask is that there's no nose definition, just a flat, curved surface. So it works alright from a profile and can be decent on a straight-forward shot, but falls apart when you draw it from other angles. Without nose definition, it tends to either look really clunky, or make it look like he's got no nose at all.

Looks pretty bad ass to me man. As for Kyle he has always been my favorite Lantern. I kind of like the new Ion as well. Of course give a Superman family fan a "Superman" with a power ring and it is pretty hard to go wrong. Needless to say the color affects on this are outstanding.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

AdamWithers In reply to Orlantis [2007-12-23 23:11:48 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! My only beef with the new Ion is that they spent so long telling us how cool it was that Kyle had changed into Ion, only to rip it away from him like it was nothing and slap it on a guy who looks identical to him. They could have at least had Sodam look unique, but no-- he's Kyle with Superman powers. And he's a total jackass! He makes Guy Gardner look modest and practical. Ugh. What is it with Geoff Johns and making stars out of douchebags?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Orlantis In reply to AdamWithers [2007-12-24 07:09:08 +0000 UTC]

But I like Superboy....Just giving you a hard time man. I know he isn't Kyle, and I like Kyle, but come on if we had powers like what he is dealing with, and then more or less have god hood thrown in our laps on top of it we might develope a little bit of a chip on our shoulder right? Don't get me wrong though I am still plenty pissed with some of the sales boosting maneuvers they have done as of late. Also it would be good to see something unique going on with Superman. Seems like everytime I pick up a freaking issue he is being controlled by someone else. Is Starro going to make a big come back soon or what? As for the character designs as of late well I can't really comment the guy seems to simply be playing to his own strength. I mean look at Jim Lee, great artist don't get me wrong, but a lot of his males look really similar besides their hair. I didn't like his Superman, but the rare appearances of Clark were nice to look at. Of course there are those that are going to cast blasphemy at me for saying this, but to each his own right? Jim seems to be a real nice guy though, at least from a couple of discussions I clued into on the internet. I just wish DC would get some new creativity flowing there. Of course the same could be said over at the house of Marvel. When is our next gen going to come up?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

AdamWithers In reply to Orlantis [2007-12-24 16:10:19 +0000 UTC]

We've got a while to wait before new creative blood flows into the big 2. Neither is really interested in new talent at all, and are so stuck on themselves and their perceived brilliance that they don't care to try new ideas. Besides, they sell like madhouse. If all the people bored or angry with their books would actually stop buying them, maybe they'd try something different. But as it is, every time they kill somebody off, change their costume, hook them up or break them up randomly, or pull everybody into another contrived, line-spanning crossover, they make huge bank. If we didn't buy it every time, they wouldn't keep doing it.

I haven't bought a DC book (outside Vertigo) since Infinite Crisis, and the only Marvel book I buy is Ultimate Spidey. I keep up with them, but they won't get my money. It's the only power I have to affect change.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Orlantis In reply to AdamWithers [2007-12-26 18:37:34 +0000 UTC]

See I am behind you to some degree, but at the same time I have seen the big two kill characters when they lose popularity, and frankly after Superboy and Kid Flash getting killed I am kind of against it happening to other great characters you know? Thank goodness you turned me on to Invincible I went out and spent a little over eighty dollars getting all the TPBs. You were right it is an excellent book. As for them trying new ideas they should come to the realization that if they don't make changes they will eventually become stagnant. We're fans and we're complaining. It is only a matter of time before it spreads to all of the fans. When you start losing die hard fans that is when you either have to change or fall to the weighside.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

AdamWithers In reply to Orlantis [2007-12-29 17:03:13 +0000 UTC]

I'd like to see a total moratorium on death in DC and Marvel comics for a long time. They've used it so often, and then ressurected so many that it's lost all meaning as a plot device and has become so obvious a ploy that even my 12-year-old students don't even have to finish the 'death issue' before saying things like "How long before they bring Cap back?"

It's lost all its power, and needs to go away for a while. Similarly, Joe Q's original declaration that Dead Means Dead ought to be enforced like absolute law. If death in comics has become the great joke, then STAYING dead has just gotten rediculous. Used to be the saying that nobody stays dead in comics except Jason Todd, Bucky, and Uncle Ben. Now we're 1/3 of the way from mass hysteria.
