Description This is an original character from the comic I and my wife are developing - 'The Uniques.'

Virtue is the 'Earth's Greatest Superhero' of our world. He's been around since 1939, is recognized as the 'first' unique, and is everything you expect out of a superman.

Part of his genesis actually came from the thought of what Superman would be like if he'd landed not in a rural farming community, but in a blue-collar shop town. How would it adjust his moral compass, his ethical motivators - still an altruistic hero of the first order, but more of an 'everyman.' His father was a part of the first sit-down strikes, his mother was one of the "Rosie the Riveter" girls during the wars; he comes from a tradition of hard work and respect for the little man that ultimately makes Virtue more a hero to the common man than any national ideal.

It's truth and justice, see, and if the American Way walks that line then good on them. But he's no nation's poster-boy-- that role belongds to Countryman, another of our characters who we'll be delving into later on. In the end, Virtue's nothing like Superman past very superficial similarities. But, then, most every character can be broken down into identical archetypes, can't they?

You can read more about Virtue, his powers, and his story in his 'Better Know a Unique' entry on our blog: [link]

Impressive! There's an elegant simplicity to his costume.

It's hard to imagine a 1940s working class kid thinking up an all-white costume scheme though -- he'd have grown up knowing just how impossible it is to keep white clothing clean!

The costume wasn't actually his idea. He and a few other uniques in a unit in the military were issued costumes in WWII as part of a propaganda campaign. When he came back home at the end of the war and decided to keep fighting the good fight, it had already become part of who he was and he kept it for that reason.

Thanks for the remarks re: elegant simplicity. My favorite costumes are the sleek, minimalist ones. Green Lantern, Flash, blue/gold Invincible, Chris Sprouse's Legionnaires, mid-80's X-Factor... simple, striking, iconic.

Looks like Bruce Willis from 16 blocks (at the very end after he's lost weight and shaven). Nicely done, and true, every superhero universe must have the requisite "all-powerful icon" archetype (including mine, natch) but never thought the Willis-type to be a good match (hard-nosed, crass, everyman)

I don't know about CRASS, but yeah otherwise that's pretty much spot on.

This is a great pic. The costume is very iconic. I'll have to read more about your characters.

Thanks a lot - iconic costumes are really hard to get, so it's nice to hear that it's working You can find more of this stuff in my gallery and in my wife and my blog [link]

It's funny, but he kinda reminds me of a light-haired, clean-shaven Bruce Willis. And that makes the character appealing to me. I know every superhero universe has got to have their Superman archetype, and I'm not a huge Superman fan (sorry), but this one actually works for me.

Well, as both a Superman and Bruce Willis fan, I thank you. And, in fact, Virtue is meant to be the 'Bruce Willis Version' of Superman, in a lot of ways. We've mentioned we use photo-reference for our comics, and usually 'cast' the main parts...you nailed our casting. It is, indeed, Mr. Willis. Well caught, and thanks for the inadvertant compliment on my characterization!

Heh, that's cool. I was just spitballin' that one. You know, the idea of "casting" for characters reminds me a lot of how Wizard Magazine will sometimes try to put an actor/actress to certain comic book individuals. Oh, and speaking of Bruce Willis, I've definitely got to see him in 'Live Free or Die Hard'. You can't really expect it to be a serious flick, but the Die Hard movies are a cult classic. I had only seen them about a couple years ago, straight in a row. Thank you for DVD combo packs, Best Buy.

Love the costume, but have to admit the hair and face aren't doing much for me. I see the white hair as an indication of his age, but shouldn't his face, then, be showing a little more weathering on it?

Otherwise I'd love to see this project once it's finished!

The hair went white due to radiation exposure - he was at ground-zero of a nuclear blast that destroyed the better part of New York state. The rest of him shows little sign of age because he's barely aged at all in the decades he's lived. While he only looks to be in his thirties or so, he's pushing 80 when our story begins.

Thanks a lot. Getting an iconic, 'classic' design is really REALLY hard. I'm pretty happy with it, and glad that people have responded well to it so far.

Ha! Thanks, Pat. The Jor-El thing is totally coincidental. Thanks for the compliments.
