Description Another old picture I scanned, redrew and coloured.
This time It's not even flat colours only! By jove, I coloured it for real! It took long enough to finish, but I'm really-really happy with it, and really proud to be honest. Especially with the colouring - something I really suck at.

Drawn during history class and refined during the course of a few days, this is an interpretation of the Egyptian god Bastet.

Bastet was the goddess of fire, cats, of the home and pregnant women. According to one myth, she was the personification of the soul of Isis. She was also called the "Lady of the East". As such, her counterpart as "Lady of the West" was Sekhmet.

Lovely work, and excellent researching as well. Thank you for not perpetuating the "Bast as sex goddess" myth. And I love love love the expression!

Actually, Bastet is the name commonly used by scholars today.
All gods in the egyptian pantheon carried many names, not even counting the many ways in which the hieroglyphs could be read now. Personally, I like Bastet better than Bast, but I will not dictate your preference.

As for what elements she was a protector of, again the egyptian pantheon was a constantly evolving thing
and attributes varied greatly in different parts of egypt. The fire I was referring to was the fire of the home; candles, torches, hearths. Tawaret is, however, as you say, a more appropriate divinity when childbirth is concerned. Well spotted.

She's perfect! I'm glad you gave her dark skin, 'cause alot of people give Egyptians and their gods pale skin (for WHATEVER reason)...anyway, an explanation for her expression:Thats how I imagined she looked when Re told her he would make her a love goddess

"So...uh, does that mean I have to watch people gettin' funky or what?"
And yeah, there's no good reason why people draw them pale now, but ancient egyptian paintings and hieroglyphs actually tended to depict women pale and men dark! I guess it was partly to tell them apart, haha, those egyptians weren't very good with perspective. Thanks a lot for your comment, It made my day! (But she's definately not 'erfect'!)

wasnt bastet also the race of were-tigers from white wolf? (RPG game werewolf/vampire the masquerada, etc)

if you have a particular interess in Bastet, i recomend you reading the comic Sandman (by Neil Gayman) shes there quite some times in a very cool fashion. i liked the character.

Anyways, really cool art. Wish i could draw humanoids.

Hm, I wouldn't know. Were-tigers?
I'm not too familiar with WW products outside of Vampire, but you're likely correct. Why were-tigers though? Jeez, they've long since gone ballistic.
Your advice has been noted though, I don't doubt Gaiman could make an interesting character out of a gal like Bast. I'll look into it! Oh, and thank you for your kind words! I'm so glad you like it.

Lovely, lovely face - she looks both beautiful and, for all her feline features, thoroughly Egyptian. Beautiful clothing and jewelry design as well, and a very nice colourscheme to boot. Mmm, delicious Egyptian mythology...

The feline features of this piece is, I feel now, a bit too catgirl-y for my personal preference, but I'm still quite content with most of it, though there are minor errors everywhere, and I'm very glad for your comment on her egyptianity..Which is now officially a word. I worked pretty hard on keeping the egyptian feel even though art-wise, it's pretty far off. Mostly this mean woring with the colours, though I decided to offset it somewhat with the green eyes.
Mmmmm, delicious Egyptian mythology...

Hmmm...understandable. It's hard to find a balance for nonhuman characters, in which they come off as inhuman without falling into a mold. Yours certainly comes closer to it than most.

Egyptianity. I approve. The feel certainly did come through, artistic license or no. Mmm, scrumptious.

Wow, so many good comments! :'D I feel like there's nothing left for me to say.. but I'm gonna try anyways! x3

I like that you're coloring stuff, even if it doesn't feel that way now, you'll only get better for each drawing. So soon you'll be an expert on how to color fur and all that, it just takes a bit of practice.

I like her face very much, as you said in a comment one could wonder why she seems insecure, but that's kinda the beauty of it, it makes you wonder what she's thinking about. Her face is colored beautifully too, it got the right amount of details to have depth, but still a bit blurry so it fits with the rest of the drawing, and the mood. Me likey!

I like the lines too, they vary a lot, from the smallest details to the thick lines of her mouth. That makes her seem more alive too, 'cause the lines themselves gives her a bit of depth.

I have two tips though colorwise! One is that you could use a darker color on her skins in just a very few selected places to give her more depth (that's the third time! I'm all about depth today xD ) If you look at a real person, shadows sometimes overlap to create really dark places, like the nostrils. Here they're black, but you could add some darker shadows to the inside of her ears and the neck just below her face. As said, if you just add the darker color the very darkest places, it could do loads for the whole image.

And secondly I feel this is quite a moody picture, like my Mistletoe pic. One thing I did in my pic was to add a gradient with blue and yellow in the topmost layer. Then I put it on 'overlay', and made the opacity quite low.. again, it's a simple change, but it does drastic things to the image! And on this pic it'd look very nice methinks. ^^

I'm so sorry, I never intended this comment to be so long.. xD;; I'm just so happy to see you post I accidentally hit the "ramble about coloring"-button.. @@;; I think it's a great image anyhow, she's very beautiful. :3

Dahilla In reply to Adi-Ilythiiri [2008-01-04 12:07:12 +0000 UTC]

Bright colors can be tricky as far as shading goes. The easiest method would be coloring with a darker shade of gold, which does produce a quasi-cellshaded effect, but still. Plus, the gold could use some highlights, so it doesn't look matte.

As for the uneasiness you mention, it's the eyes. The eyebrows suggest a slightly sarcastic expression, but the eyes being open fairly wide give an angsty feel.

So, my advice is following (I know you didn't ask, I'm one of those assholes who simply assume): one - add another layer of shading, it's placed appropriately and looks good but is too subtle; and the robe doesn't seem to have any; two - shade the head... dress... thing, whatever that's called, three - add some light reflections on the jewelery and the gold headband. I'm thinking about highlights on the skin and hair, but I'm not sure whether that is skin or fur, so perhaps let's leave that for now.

With the above out of the way, the whole is done neatly and cleanly colored, the linework looks smooth and the eyes have a feline touch to them. I'm not a fan of the anthro style in general, but this looks good. As with the previous one, I like how the figure, or at least what can be seen of it, isn't Stick Figure Barbie, but has a form to it.

/end rant

peace

Adi-Ilythiiri In reply to Dahilla [2008-01-04 13:52:49 +0000 UTC]

About the eyes, I know -why- the picture give the sarcastic/uneasy feel, I was more looking for an explanation as to why bastet would look uneasy, but thank you :3

All the other advice is highly appreciated, really, I did my best but there is certainly room for a lot of improvement.
Thinking how I haven't used a tablet for a year I think I did decent - Everything you say is absolutely true though.
Shading fur however, will probably take a long time for me to master - check back again in a few years!
I must add, however, that I'm not a fan of the anthro styles either, really, though obviously the egyptians were.
From my point of view there are several categories of anthro - we have the two I really don't like; atrocious manga girls with catears and a bell, and the cartoonish furry stuff I -really- can't grasp.
I must confess some degree of fancy for the more realistic (and I use the term loosely) versions of felinae/homo sapience - constituting a racial branch of their own - preferably very distinct, not like I said; "catgirls". The more probable the better.
I have a hard time coming up with an example that fits the description, but I might mention the Khajiit.

Nevermind that though, merely saying A + B isn't C to me, but while I don't generally draw much "anthro", there's a good chance there will be a few submissions in that category soon - Will most likely be in the scraps section though.
Thanks for peeking a boo, the kind words and the criticism!

I'd wager you won't find me drawing stick-barbies. Ever.

Dahilla In reply to Adi-Ilythiiri [2008-01-04 14:19:06 +0000 UTC]

Before I reply to anything, be warned that sometime in the near future I'm going to pick a stupid and pointless fight with you, because damn, we agree on a lot.

Anyway. Yeah, the overall fascination with anthro is inexplicable to me too - especially the sort of anime cheerleaders, who's mothers apparently had one night stands with half the local fauna (I know the description's gross, but "if it walks like a duck..." et al). I do draw a line between those and more worthwhile stuff as well. Khajiit are quite alright... hell, I've uploaded some myself, so I'd be a hypocrite, bitching here.

So. That is fur then. Hm, yeah, shading that is a headache usually. Although, the simplified thing you did on her left cheek works well, it's just because of the aforementioned light shading.

And hey, if it helps - I barely know how to use a tablet, and would probably do atrocious shading with one.

peace

This is someting like my second attempt at colouring so I feel entitled to accept your comment with a blush and a sheepish grin.
My only reservation is that perhaps she looks a bit too...uneasy for a godess that supposedly slaughtered her enemies by the hundreds (And also took care of the house and pregnant women, wow, it's true about girls and multitasking!)
Oh well, perhaps...uh... suggestions? Why's she so uneasy?
