Description

July 26, 1969

An unexpected burst of tremendous seismic activity near the remote Blood Rock - a tiny rocky island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean - has attracted the attention of a number of noted scientists. The UN sent a number of scientists to investigate the region. I've been presented with a summons to join them. The fact that no kaiju-related activity has been reported in the area makes me nervous - otherwise, why would the UN send for me?

July 27

Within Blood Rock, the collapsed and broken ruins of an advanced military base are being quietly unearthed and cataloged. Most of the base's tunnels seem to have collapsed. No government on Earth is claiming responsibility for the base, and neither the military or civilians on Blood Rock seem to know who built it, or for what purpose. The Red Bamboo was apparently the initial suspect, but the base itself seems too small, automated, and advanced for them. The investigation is ongoing.

I myself was summoned to the base to study a number of large animal remains, a small horde of rat-like beasts found strewn amidst the rubble. We have uncovered eight so far, but we believe more are deeper in the collapsed tunnels. The creatures are particularly bizarre - in spite of appearing rat-like, their basic proportions are more akin to something between a chimpanzee and an English bulldog, with long, muscular forelimbs, a flattened skull, and strangely oversized canines. Whether the creatures are native to the tunnels of Blood Rock, or were created by whoever built the base, remains a mystery. More interestingly still, the rat remains we have found appear to be heavily burned, as though they suffered from a fire before the island collapsed.

Reality check: this is a giant rat from "Latitude Zero". I do not own the rights, etc, etc...

So these rats have canine teeth? That alone makes them pretty damn unique among rodents - true rodents have no canine teeth, just molars and enlarged incisors.

That's right! Malic's genetic engineering really did a number on them.
