The second dragon in my Dragoniad series is a Balaur and another concept for my book "The Hunt". They are underground dwelling dragons that dig tunnels by drilling with the tusks and horns that adorn it's 7 heads. They have short webbed feet that they use as shovels. Despite being very hard to kill (see - 7 heads) they are rather shy and are mostly scavengers.

Traditional is awesome but I think my next dragon will be digital :> scanning was a bitch, I hadn't scanned anything in such a long time that my printer was not even installed on my computer and it took a lot of coaxing to finally get it going. But the details are better than what I got by photographing so at least there's that.

My Dragoniad deviations:

Thank you all who decided to do this Dragoniad with me! It's so much more fun to draw together ^^ As promised here is the first batch of dragons, they are very creative and I love them all!
As a reminder, the prize is a three month premium membership, which will be given in a raffle to one of the contestants. To enter you must draw a dragon. It's that simple.
The contest is not over so note me with new drawings and I will add them to my next deviation's artist comments and to keep track of all of them I will make a complete list in my contest journal, where you can also finad all the contest details: Merry Christmas + premium sub. Dragon challenge

Sorry! Aparently dA doesn't allow a lot of thumbs in the artist comments so I will only be adding one thumb for each person and a normal link for the others. I hoped I could display all of them but I can't

Dragoniad submissions:
     and Quetzalcoat
Drimfly Dragon , Morfins Dragon , Mzurak dragon , O'Hion Dragon

I love the idea of this dragon !
and the way u drew him explains his traits straight.
blind yet with a great sensing abillity specialy through its nose !
normaly one would assume that the hands or claws are the only means used for the drilling, but you chose to make it through the tusks and horns found on its multiple heads and with the help of its arms/legs the creature will shovel through its path more easily pushing whatever it dug away using its webbed hands and feets !
A well chosen name for this one too, Balaur the multiple headed dragon from the Romanian folklore. It suits him well.
I say you did a pretty good job on this one and i hope to see more of your dragon related drawing in the futute  e.deviantart.net/emoticons/c/c… " width="20" height="20" alt="" data-embed-type="emoticon" data-embed-id="60" title="Clap"/> e.deviantart.net/emoticons/c/c… " width="20" height="20" alt="" data-embed-type="emoticon" data-embed-id="60" title="Clap"/>

Hey this is pretty awesome, very nice detail. I like the whole anatomical breakdown you did of the dragon a lot, it's brief and what's really nice is it explains enough to make the artist create these mental visualizations of the dragon's movements which is nice. You provided a colored sketch of the dragons head which was a nice touch, and even though it's the focal point, or at least to me it is, it doesn't take away from the rest of the piece which is nice. The concept seemed to be very well thought out, which is probably your greatest accomplishment on the piece really cool. I like what you did with the tail, I think the lack of an outline kind of gives it this celestial feel. My only criticism is that the left hand, and the two feet on the full body drawing looks a little faded in with the rest of the body, but nothing a little fine shading, or inking can't fix to make it pop out more.

I love the detail that you put into your work. I love how you did the feet and head they are FANTASTIC. I think you did especially well on the seven necks, I know how difficult it is to proportion multiple necks on one body. The tusks are very well done and I think that the tail is AMAZING. You are so imaginative and talented and I love your creativity. I hope that there will be another one soon because I really enjoy your work and I LOVE your originality. Keep up the GREAT work I hope to see another picture soon. e.deviantart.net/emoticons/s/s… " width="15" height="15" alt="" data-embed-type="emoticon" data-embed-id="391" title=" (Smile)"/>

The detail on the head is impecible, I love how you've taken ideas from moles and especially the star-nosed for their face, giving them the sensitive nose and tendrils on it to feel around as they dig. I think it'll work amazingly. My only concern for them is the spinning for a drill like effect as they dig. While it could work thanks to the spikes along their neck and the tusks, it does seem like a lot of complications could arise such as the amount of pure energy that woudl take constantly spinning around to burrow since it'd have to be their whole body not just the heads spinning.
Another concern of mine is their brain or brains perhaps, would they all have singular within the skull which means they would all have different thoughts and so could lead to complications but also means they could have an innate behaviour of working as one or perhaps even more perculicar do they all share one brain, larger to cope with the thinking power of seven but stored within the body.
Also I feel as if hunting for food would be a problem, obviously they'd have to come above ground to get food but how would they? It'd be very hard to sneak attack by breaking through the ground since they would most likely make a lot of large vibrations from their movement.

Hope this helps at all and would love to know your ideas to tackle these.

Everything is well explained and we understand very well how your creature function. The drawings as well are really neat and well done. I think it's a super original idea to make a kind of dragon look a like creature that can dig underground. His name is also great, because it makes reference to Romanian folklore. The fact that you put him a sensitive nose is great because it makes up for the fact that he cannot see. Only problem about the creature is his conception. He is supposed to dig with his 3 heads at the same time, which is kinda cool but makes no sense at all, because first of all, the necks cant twist infinitely. Second of all, his horns doesn't make it easy for digging, if you can put those horn facing directly towards him would make it a lot more effective. And third of all, his front legs are too small to support all the weight of his upper body. Putting him larger and muscular front legs would be more logical for all that weight he has to support.

I love the old look to the paper, that helps it a ton, however, I am having trouble reading the writing, if it's in cursive then disregard this comment, I can't read cursive very well anyway, but could you make it a little bolder so you read it better? I also love the scales and how real it looks but like I said, maybe make it a little more pronounced, bolder, that would make it nice to look at but other than that it's a magnificent piece of art and I really like it. It looks like it should be a dragon in Skyrim! Fantastic. P.S. I like it looks like a mole....

In depth description and highly detailed drawings of the dragon. e.deviantart.net/emoticons/c/c… " width="20" height="20" alt="" data-embed-type="emoticon" data-embed-id="60" title="Clap"/> It is interesting to see original ideas of dragons. Looking at it's head and legs I can note the similarities to a mole. The use of brownish paper adds to the connection between this type of dragon and the earthy surrounds of the environment that it will find itself in. I like that small note at the top in which you state how the dragon spins in the drilling technique, although it would be nice to see a bigger version of the motions step by step. It is a very good study and representation of your idea. e.deviantart.net/emoticons/b/b… " width="15" height="15" alt="" data-embed-type="emoticon" data-embed-id="366" title=" (Big Grin)"/>

Really cool pic. The star-shaped mole nose and tusks were the first thing to be noticed and brough the mind to a burrowing creature of the earth.
The brown look on the paper makes it look like a page from an ancient bestiary, and the long, sinuous serpentine body gives a very lifelike feel.

The Balaur is a very cool and imaginative creature, and I think you should be proud to have come up with such an impressive creature concept!

I am a huge fan of these "Parts of the being" type of sketches. I like to see the creature as a whole, and once I'm done analyzing it, I like to see what it's made of and how each piece interacts with each other and helps create the whole.
And this is why I can tell you that I really like this design!
