Another entry in the "Just one thing different" category. This time it's about May's return to Johto after the Wallace Cup. As her boat was heading back, a large storm trapped them at sea. The storm was so powerful that May was knocked overboard in the commotion and was severely injured by the raging waves before she was finally pulled out of the water. The ship's crew finally managed to limp the boat back to Lake Valor where May was taken to the hospital. Having heard about the boat through the news, Ash and his friends quickly returned to Lake Valor to check on May. They were horrified to learn that due to the severe beating her body took, especially her head, her optic nerves had been severally damaged, leaving her completely blind. The news left Ash in particular in shock, blaming himself for letting May try to go back to Johto alone. May's family was called to come and get her, but due to Hoenn's distance from Sinnoh (as shown here ), it would be several days at least before they could arrive. Devastated that this had happened to May, Ash decided to stay with her and take care of her until her parents arrive. But as May sinks further into depression over what's happened to her, Ash must find a way to give her hope while wrestling with his own feelings of guilt and growing feelings for her.
