Well I would advice just "black lining" major objects. This is normally a black outline of things but if you just do a very small line (think the size of a needle) of the color your using, about 3 shades darker it can really *Pop* things.

I was thinking more of a shading and not black lining.
I think black lining will make anything look comic art.

I find that when it is done right (as in using a medium blue on a light blue object) it can by pass the comic art look. And fine use the less lazy way and shade things.
