Description Exposure to zillions of artists is one of the principal drives I've had to improve as an artist and come to where I am today. This I owe to the dev community.

I'm not putting myself on a pedestal here. I'm not a seasoned comic pro... hell, I wouldn't exactly call myself a pro yet, my first printed work isn't even on the shelves yet. However, I am a professional artist, and I think I have some knowledge and experience.

That's why it's time to give back to community. Pay it forward, so to speak.

These sketches are excercises in character rendering. I reallyrecommend you do the steps in the order listed. It really helps to speedily repeat the same craneofacial makeup several times, since it helps create muscle memory. They say teaching is learning, and I agree, I got more out of making this then I think people will get out of reading it.

Anyway, I hope it helps anyone working to become a better artist. And remember, be original. No technique is the superior (certainly not mine), and take what you get out of this tutorial and make it your own.

I'll try to whip out a female heroic, and then a male and female civilian version, soon.

Disclaimer is on the bottom. Ya damn hyenas!

Bleach characters actually have very distinguished faces compared to almost every other anime.

I've noticed, but the visual tropes are the same.

About 90 percent of the time, yeah, unfortunatly. It's a bad habit of japan. :/

Did you do a Female Craneofacial yet? I've been looking for something that helps me with female facial expressions, or something exaggerated like what does.

Actually I have the hardest time with sexy poses and facial expressions regarding women.

I never did... nor do I think I will, my style and methods have changed dramatically since I made this. I will probably make a revised, unisex craneofacial tutorial distilling the basics of my style... but not anytime soon. I am full time professional artist now, when I made this tutorial I was barely in school.

That's a shame. Would you know anyone who is an expert or worth consulting about how to draw sensual poses?

Porn.

And no, I'm not kidding

That's what everyone else has said to me, but I've tried that and it doesn't really help from a drawing perspective. All I get is photographs that don't really suggest what more I can do with a female figure composition. I want to be able to pose a female figure the way I want her to be posed, but without constantly using photography as a reference which is based on how they want to pose.

People also suggest Posemaniacs but that stuff is too random and generic to be useful.

I feel like I need to ask a swimsuit model about pose techniques for this.

Love this, although I have to say I don't see what is a problem with having Bleach-like characters if that's what you're going for. I mean, you could give me all of the characters with the same skin color and no hair, and I'd probably still be able to tell you who all the characters are.

Still, this really helps with my more Amrerican comic-book ideas. Thanks!

AenTheArtist In reply to Obi-quiet [2011-10-03 16:39:13 +0000 UTC]

It's not a problem, until you try to break into other mediums besides manga but you end up transplanting the style.

shadowmagi In reply to AenTheArtist [2011-09-19 20:35:39 +0000 UTC]

Not only that, when there ARE male face tutorials, it's usually bishie/girlie manga style. While that's all fine and dandy, it can be frustrating when you're trying to creat uber manly characters!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

AenTheArtist In reply to shadowmagi [2011-09-19 22:11:36 +0000 UTC]

Ugh, I hate bishie. *fume*

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

shadowmagi In reply to AenTheArtist [2011-09-20 18:22:48 +0000 UTC]

BAHAHA I don't mind em, but I find far too often the people who throw them into the story do so as an excuse for hawt boyXboy action. Nothing against those who like that, but I mean c'mon. Most of it just feels like the artist indulging in personal fantasy rather than trying to be original.

There's certainly a "bishifying for man on man fanfiction" subset in deviantart.
