Chapter 27: Lost and Found |Table of Contents | Chapter 29: Whisper On a ScreamJust FYI I'm using this switch to digital and slight style change to spring sudden and unexplained design changes on you and we're just going to pretend that Liam, Dana, and Poseidon always looked like that.
Oops I made Giovanni attractive.
Let's talk about Giovanni- who is just a huge mystery in-game. I chose to humanize him a bit here and show a more "family man" side of him. He did bad things... But I think he did them with good intentions and I think he was trying to fill a certain role. I think he cares about Silver and his wife. And I think that's why when an 11-year-old threatens him, Giovanni steps aside instead of ever hurting or even threatening to hurt a child.
As to what I think would happen between him and Team Rocket in Johto (2 years later) is something I will be showing either in the epilogue or as a sort side comic/history dump.
As far as the battle: Poseidon 1HKO'd all of his pokemon (which I thought would be redundant and pointless to show) and I let Arnold take the Nidoqueen and king. I did that so he get some extra experience before the E4.
In the battle with the Nidoqueen, she used body slam and Arnold was paralyzed (but it did very little damage). Like most people, I thought nothing of it and let him stay in and kept fighting.
Well, that's awfully callous when you think how terrifying it would be to have to fight while paralyzed.
He 1HKO'd the Nidoking with Blast Burn though. X)
Penny actually never evolved into Pigeot. She was boxed and I never took her out again. This might be the last time you see her- IDK.
And yes, I caught a lot of pokemon in Sevii (and you'll notice the number of "total pokemon" going up) but since I never actually used them, it seemed silly to devote a panel to their capture.

This is not my favorite versions of Giovanni but this is still a very good one, it adds that bit more to the character that it really needs. My favorite version is when he tries to right his wrongs by trying to re-capture Newtwo, but the main character doesn't realize this and just destroys team Rocket, and anyway this version of Giovanni was going to disband his team after Newtwo's capture. Mewtwo was a true monster in that version and was not really fleshed out, so I guess you can't win them all.
I would also like to take back what I said early this Nuzlocke does feel like a good length and my only criticize is that the battle scenes are not that fleshed out (long) and not as flashy as I would like, but the story is what I am here for, the battles are just what would have made this comic something truly amazing.

I'm glad you enjoyed my Giovanni. I also enjoy the "I'm trying to do the right thing, god dammit, child" Giovanni, but I wanted to stick to his villainous aspect and make him more of a... Al Capone kind of character. An honorable mobster.
Haha, yeah, I hate drawing battle scenes. But I also feel that big battles in The Fall would be kinda silly since it's largely character-driven. I mean long dramatic battle are fun to see and such, but, if you'll remember my ruleset, I couldn't use items so it was very important to finish battles as quickly as possible in-game. Leaf is following that same strategy in the comic. Besides, letting a battle drag on means you're evenly matched and both sides will get hurt pretty badly.
Leaf is not evenly matched against the gym leaders and that's kind of the point.
In short, I see where you're coming from, but I do feel that it was the right thing to do for this nuzlocke. X)

i like how u didn't make Geo a super bad guy like everyone else, he's just a fair, honest, family man, and i like that. also that whole scene with gyrados and rhyhorn was great XD

Darn right you did! He looks great! WAY better than the anime and manga depict him, he actually looks like a person rather than a mafia don cutout. The way you actually brought in his family was also great, and I don't think that's been done before. Little!Silver is adorable and his wife beautiful. You also bring up very valid points to Giovanni's characters and I eagerly await to see what you come up with for the Johto Fiasco bit.
Question: Does Giovanni's regular absence from his Gym mean that there are very few people who actually challenge the Elite Four? Or are just not a lot of trainers partaking in the challenge? How does the Indigo Leage work in your Verse?
I must say that this new digital style definitely suits you better. Liam looks great and Danna was even more beautiful than your previous showings of her. And Arnold is, as usual, downright gorgeous--though you seem to have forwent giving his hide the detail it had in the previous chapter-- but once again his teeth are hands-down terrifying. I also keep forgetting just how big he is, wow...and he whups tail even when fully paralyzed! He rules!
I really liked Poseidon's expressions in this, especially the smug smile after he 1HKO'd that poor Rhyhorn. Priceless.
The various bits byplay was also great, especially between Giovanni and Leaf.
"I need the badge? Good grief, man." Just about had me fall out of my chair--though their whole back-and-forth was great--and let's not forget the Rhyhorn's reaction to seeing Poseidon.
I really liked the way you pulled off Giovanni's pose when Poseidon's hydro pump (that was a hydro pump, right?) shot passed him, not to mention what little could be seen of his expression. Both can be surprisingly difficult to get right, but you managed flawlessly!
And now another 3 weeks until the next update. *sigh*
(Will you ever post a list of the pokemon Leaf caught? I'm rather curious about them even though very few were shown in the story proper)

I should not be allowed to make all my character so attractive... I'm pretty sure it's the scruff though. (I love drawing scruff). Yeah, the anime and manga really stereotype him and I never liked that. I've just ignored the their versions of characters and worked with the vague bits I got from the game.
I couldn't resist bringing in his family because Silver is such a brat and I love it. XD I can't wait to show how their family ended up in Johto.
Well, it says in-game the Gym was actually closed while he was gone, but I think that he would probably have few and far-between challengers since we don't see anyone else's names in the other Gym's besides the Player's and Gary's. Soo... From that I'd guess that he doesn't get a lot of traffic.
It's so much better... It's so great. I love drawing it digitally. *w*
Hahah! Oh my gosh- you might be the only person who would notice that. Yeah, I left out the scales. It was an 8 page chapter and he showed up so often that ended up letting that go. XD

I'm glad you enjoyed it. Reviews with 1-2 lines of generic 'great job' are nice acknowledgement and all, but nothing really beats a review that says the reviewer actually looked at and saw what was put up in a greater depth than a mere cursory glance. To say nothing of actual feedback. So I try to give indepth reviews when I can, though it might take me a while to actually get it done...
Sure you should! It's hard to find decent, realistically attractive characters and you do them well!
Oh yeah, it's definitely the scruff. Makes him look human, with all that entails. And I think it even shows some of the stress caused from prior events! He looks worn, frustrated, but at the same time happy to be with his family and he looks much more relaxed after the battle. All in all a very nice showing!
In regards to his design, I think you took just enough of his 'trademark' features that he'll be easily recognizable while tossing out the overall rubbish design. ((I really liked his coat, btw. And I want Leaf's coat! Heck, I want both coats! They're just too cool!!))
I can't wait to see the story behind that!
Hm...true, I completely forgot about that stone where Leaf was dubbed 'Red'. So that means the 'yearly competition' as shown in both show and manga doesn't exist, so the Elite 4 can focus on more important manners than an onslaught of would-be upstarts. Actually...what purpose DOES the Elite 4 serve? All the ideas that come to my mind are generally covered by your incarnation of the Pokemon Rangers...
I think the multiple near-full-body-shots of Arnold more than make up for the lack of visible scales. His overall design is just so pleasing-to-the-eye!
And Poseidon portrays 'smugness' extremely well. Must by a Gyarados thing...
Oh, meant to ask before, but why is his tail-flipper so big? I mistook it for a fan at first. Was there a specific reason behind the size?

*notes 'shiny golbat'* Huh...funny, have you noticed how the most common shiny in Nuzlockes seem to be Golbats? But to my frustration the only shiny I found in my Run was a Lombre. Useless for battle but made a convenient HM Slave (though he gets a slightly better position in my intended plot)

Yeah it takes a while to write them. And it does take me some time to respond to (thus the 2 day delay OTL) but it means a lot to me. ;w;
It really lets me know how well I did things and if the things I did were even noticed. XD
Lol! Well, less attractive people are fun to draw too. I think most people who try to draw semi-realistically just haven't quite found a good style yet. It's a little trickier than other styles, I think, and a lot more understanding of proportions and anatomy.

Ah, thanks! I actually crossed his Kanto design with his Johto design (the black trench coat). His Johto design is pretty boss. His Kanto one isn't too horrible, but it's nothing special.
You'll see what the Elite Four is meant to do in The Fall and probably into the side comics. But the basic purpose of it is to govern all trainers (like game canon states).

True, very true, but everyone has different ideas on what's attractive and what's not. So even if you drew an ugly character someone, somewhere, would think they were attractive.

Shiny rattata? This is the first I've heard of that one. I think at least two other Nuzlocker's I've read caught shiny Golbat (or Zubat), and one of the Nuzlocker's caught one two nuzlockes in a row, boy was he annoyed. And now you make three.

Yeah- that's true. I guess I just don't think of any of my characters (even the really really minor ones who only get one panel of exposure) are ugly. I'm getting better at being more diverse and pushing the lines a bit out of my comfort zone.
Proportioning is awful. You get the hair line or one eyebrow off, and the whole face is wrong and it drives me nuts.

I agree, some are just less interesting to look at than others. You are definitely quite diverse in your various designs.
For me it's usually the nose or chin, something my little sister takes great pleasure in pointing out. And apparently have a thing for drawing long legs...I don't see it but that's what both my mom and sister say.
Long coats and their epic swish rule! And I almost never leave the house without my own fedora (sans when going to work, darn it.) but though I can manage to draw them most of the time they still have lots of room for improvement.
Gotta love the sass! It's half the reason I started following this story! Yeah, I can definitely see the greater stability, though sometimes it's hard to tell when her youth and inexperience become obvious.
Really? Did not know that. The one I'm referring to, with the double Shiny Golbat, is an...interesting series, to say the least. It spans multiple games and the author takes great pleasure in replacing various characters with easily-recognizable and iconic ones. Such as Popeye-the-Sailorman and Olive replacing Archie and Shelly.
Lemme say you're not missing much. It's really hard to sort through all the pain-inducing ones to find the rare gems, such as yours and ShadeofShinon's.

i am lovin the style changes. poseidons face especially looks different to me ((probably cause we have already seen a bit of liams design change)). i dont know how but dana is even more adorable. you must stop this. she might rival arnold or even barnaby soon. bug types ftw though
this side of giovanni is really cool to see. i guess i never thought about it much but as a literal mobster he almost definitely could do a lot worse to the young protagonist than a pokemon battle. it makes sense that hes got morals and such that prevent him from doing so. i also enjoy that you included silver here, as that ties in really well with the continuity of hg/ss.
update on my nuzlocke playthrough- i now have 5 badges and am trying to still figure out the best team in terms of type-coverage ((gotta love egglockes)). also decided to start another nuzlocke to tie into this one because im a freakin idiot who has grandoise plans no one can match. fffffff- this might be the most complicated storyline i have ever attempted but im so in love with it i cant bare the thought of leavin much out. so. heres to hopin i can speedrun the second egglocke a bit and finish these soonish since im already drawin out my first few pages.
