Description This was a concept rendering I did for the folks helping to theme the new Google headquarters in New York. They're doing an entire floor of the building in a Steampunk theme, and were tapping steampunk artists all over the place for ideas.

I envisioned a large brass or copper dome with old ships portholes all over it that could house 4 people in a ring bench around the inside perimeter. The interior would be all steampunked out with pipes, globe lanterns, polished wood, and maybe victorian wallpaper. In the center of the circular room would be an olds ships compass or such that housed projectors which projected a short presentation on the walls of the dome explaining the google technology through the years and future plans, etc..

Outside there would be a boiler section attached to the dome with large pipes which would house the necessary computer equipment and AC blowers, etc.

Unfortunately I've never been able to do anything inside the box, and this thing was no different. It was just a tad outside their budget and design scale so it never made it into the final presentation to Google. They were looking more for functional "art" fashioned from repurposed period materials... something I've never really had any interest in.

My stuff is decidedly a bit more dystopian than I'm sure any sane corporation would like in their lobby. The happy, fluffy victorian steampunk brass goggles genre is a bit too 'nice' for me. But who could pass up an opportunity to have something in the google HQ, so I had to give it a shot and force myself to think happy...

I thoroughly enjoyed working on it, and was delighted and honored to even be considered for such a high-profile project, so in the end I call it a win!

Built and rendered as vector line art in Maya, hand colored in photoshop.

Cheers!
Mike

P.S. the text on the image was not on the original concept, I just couldn't help adding it here..
