I can't neglect another of my favourites from one of my favourite anime series.Shinji is normally suffering some angst or another problem so I thought I'd be nice to him and draw him with a bit of resolve.

Thanks for drawing him with a determined expression for a change - most people remember him as the crying wreck he was in EoE, but he only ended up like that after everyone he loved crumbled and died around him while he had to watch helplessly. He was actually quite a badass for the largest part of the show (just watch the action arc again, his standart expression in battle pretty much matches your fanart ) - he simply didn't know he was cool and thus sunk into a pit of self-hatred... but in the end, after all this, he still chose to live. PPl tend to forget that so much....
Shinji is actually a nice, caring, thoughtful, very talented person. It's just that his Daddy wasn't around to tell him that (Ironically, because he had the same problem)
Or well, at least Rebuild silenced many of his haters hehehe and it looks like he will finally get one of the hot chicks!

I saw this way too often but I really ought to do more Evangelion fanart. I always felt sorry for Shinji because as a protagonist it seems he is peripheral to all these female characters around him lol.

good job. It's nice to see that there are some ppl out there who have Shinji on their fav char list. Well, he's not one of my top 3 or something, but I'm getting really tired of everyone hating him. Yeah, he let the whole world go to crap in EoE, but some forget that EoE takes place the day after Episode 24. His life had sucken before that, but only few ppl could make reasonable decisions if they had just been forced to kill their best friend, not to mention the only one (exept for Rei and maybe, just maxbe misato) who ever cared about him without second thoughts and the only one to say it straight to his face.
At least we can hope that all this hate will stop now that he actually got to do something heroic in Rebuild. (Allthough I think that he had his moments in the original, too.

Shinji is a great character and probably very reflective about how most people would react in situations of gross stress and discomfort. I think in narrative terms he is a bad example of a protagonist though. He hasn't got main character likeability lol.

Neither had Lucy the Diclonius, Lain Iwakura or Light Yagami. You construct your story around the protagonist, so extraordinary protagonists are the first step towards extraordinary stories.

Shinji wasn't innocent he was confused, troubled even. He didn't know whether he liked boys or girls and the reason there were synch factors with any of the evangelion cast was coz the EVAs themselves were related to their prospetive users in some fashion or another.
Unit O and Rei Ayanami are biologically similar and Unit 1 assimilated Yui Ikari which ultimately synches with Shinji Ikari. In Air/Death and Rebirth Asuka claimed to have found her dead mother's soul in the AT field/core of the Evangelion. Toji Suzuhara is the only exception to the rule, but he never got the chance to do any soulssearching before he got owned.

aw i don't know. Shinji is to me more likely suffering from innocence. He's innocent. And pure. That's what makes him that sceptic. That's what gives him such power with the EVA. That's what allows him to access a soulcombination with the Eva 01.
It's why he's the solution to the third impact.

This pic was created via my usual means.
I draw it in pencil. (erasing my one million mistakes as I go along)
Then Ink the lines.
Add the faint lines (pencil) to seperate light areas from midtones and shades.
Colour the skin with markers...
Colour the lighter colours in markers followed by the darker colours. (Aways do black last because it can bleed into other colours, plus you dont want your markers to get those black nib tips)
Use a regular pencil to add shadow to white areas.
When I draw I normally use a mechanical pencil (HB leads) and to ink I use a technical drawing pen (0.1 mm nib)
