Oh, really? Actually, I had always assumed that they all looked the same, until my friends and I bumped into a graduate student with a container of different garter snakes at college. It seems that they can vary quite a bit, though this is what all the ones I've seen in the wild at home (southern NH) look like.

Yeah, but I've encountered the babies too. They don't look much different, 'cept they've got the green bellies instead of white/yellow.
But I think I just recently ran into the kind of garter snake in this picture.
He was a big one and he was more spotty than stripey, but he might have been a gopher snake. Which also doesn't make sense because they're mostly found in California, and rarely where I live.. AND they're illegal to sell here..
