Description
This is my version of TLOK.
I have been working on this forever, I’m so happy it’s finally finished! It took forever to figure out how I wanted Korra to look. In the end I based her on myself and Allison Stokke. Since 2018 I have this idea of a live-action Korra movie. What I have in mind is very different from the series. As I find the series to have a lot of flaws, unfortunately. Also, we need Aaron Ehasz!
Okay, so here comes the controversy. The world of Avatar is a cartoon and you can’t really compare the ‘races’ in the Avatar world with our own. Yes the series did use aspects of the real world as influence & inspiration, but it is not a representation of actual cultures, as they merged them together and created something new. However this topic sparks a lot of debate online with different sides and no consensus. Some strongly believe the characters should only be cast by people of the race that each nation was mostly inspired by and definitely don’t want to see any white actors. While others just want the characters to look like the characters in the series, regardless of their ethnicity. What I recently saw was that some people compare Naruto to Avatar, saying that even though Naruto is based in an Asiatic world, just like Avatar, not all characters are of that origin. Naruto is an American (caucasian) boy. They also point out that certain characters have more Asiatic features like Jeong Jeong, while others don’t or that Aang, even as he grows up, has white features. And then there is Republic City, which is primarily inspired by western 1920’s and New York City and the Earth Empire resembling the 3rd Reich. So the debate just goes on.
For my version of Avatar, I wanted to disconnect it from the animated series. Therefor it is NOT cartoon accurate and I don’t want it to be.
! I’m basing Kyoshi Island on Japan, the Earth Kingdom / Ba Sing Se on China, some villages of the Earth Kingdom are based on Vietnam, the Philippines, Korea, and other Asiatic countries, the Sandbender Tribes on the Arabic world (non-Islam), the Water Tribes on native tribes (incl. Sami, Inuit, Native American, Yupik, Polynesian, Aboriginal, Sakha, Yakut, etc.) with influences of Mongolia, Siberia, Italy, and Kazachtstan, the Air Nomads on Buddhist Shaolin soldier monks, Tibetan and Buddhist culture, and India, and the Fire Nation on the German Empire, Italy, and the Third Reich with influences of Imperial Japan, Scandinavia, Kazachstan, the Ottoman Empire, and China.

BIO
Korra is the incarnation of the Avatar and the successor of Avatar Aang. She is born and raised in the Southern Water Tribe and the only child of Tonraq and Senna. Korra is from a multicultural family, her father is from the Northern Water Tribe and her mother is from the Fire Nation. When she was a kid, Korra had difficulties waterbending, which resulted in getting picked on by the other kids. Water is the element of change, and change is something Korra struggled with when she was young. One day Korra got so upset and angry at one of her bullies for calling her a half-baked waterbending hybrid she firebended, scaring the crap out of them. At the age of six, Korra is officially introduced to the Order of the White Lotus as the new Avatar. At last she finally feels special and unique.
Duo to vague reasons Korra grew up in a Water Tribe compound, away from the public eye as she pursued the arts of bending. She honed her waterbending under the tutelage of Katara, though her instinctive aggressive style was nothing like the calm, slow movements master Katara tried to pass on. Therefor she often trained with Kya (who was able to keep Korra intone) under the supervision of Katara. It took Korra years to fully master waterbending. After becoming a waterbending master, Korra went on to learn earthbending, which came very easy to her just as firebending. After passing her firebending test, the Order of The White Lotus and master Katara agreed she was ready for her final element. In order for her to learn airbending, Tenzin had to move to the Southern Water Tribe. However on his arrival he announced he and his family were only staying a couple of days and would then return to Republic City, which greatly upsets Korra.
Korra takes matters into her own hands and decides it was time for her to leave the South Pole and discover the world. All her previous lives have done it, why not her. Korra wasn’t able to face her parents and wrote them a letter instead. With Katara’s blessing, Korra leaves the compound with Naga through a secret escape route in case of emergencies and stows away on a ship headed for Republic City. After a few days of travel Korra and Naga finally arrive in the city. She quickly gets lost trying to find her way to Air Temple Island and runs into equalists spreading propaganda. After having a heated discussion the police swaps in and place the equalists under arrest for spreading hate and disturbing public order, and Korra decides to walk it off. While wandering through the city Korra comes across the bad parts of Republic City, the crime areas filled with poverty (where the majority of the bending community lives). When she sees a group of gangsters harassing non-benders, her instincts take over as she puts herself between them. The gangsters (known as the Triple Thread Triad) are not amused by her interference and try to (unsuccessfully) take her down. The police swops in and place everybody under arrest, including Korra. Korra who wants to explain the situation evades arrest but eventually gets captured. At the police station she finds herself in some serious trouble with Chief Beifong for minor property damage and evading arrest. However all charges are dropped duo to Tenzin’s interference.
After a discussion on their way back to Air Temple Island with Korra pleading that the city needs her, Tenzin has a decision to make. Tenzin eventually allows her to stay with him and start her airbending training, admitting he tried to keep his father’s dream for Republic City up, but that things have fallen out of balance since his passing. He wanted to put off her training to uphold his legacy but realizes that she is his legacy.
Before her training can start the Order of the White lotus guards travel with Kya to Republic City. The White Lotus guards get stationed at Air Temple Island to ensure Korra’s safety. Hamir, Korra’s personal guard wasn’t happy with her “getaway” and a kept a very close watch on her afterwards, which annoys Korra. Kya on the other hand came to see how Korra is doing and inform her that airbending might not come easy to her, saying that air is the element of freedom and she never experienced freedom. As Kya predicted Korra’s progress is slow and she gets more frustrated in time, eventually resulting in her lashing out at Tenzin. To unwind Korra wants to visit a pro-bending match, but is forbidden to do so by Tenzin.
Korra feeling trapped again gets angry at Tenzin and decides to sneak out at night to visit the pro-bending arena. Korra arrives at the arena but is unable to buy a ticket because everything was sold out. Refusing to miss the match, she sneaks in but gets caught by Toza. Luckily for her she gets saved by a pro-bender who was passing by. To make Korra’s first pro-bending experience memorable the pro-bender takes her out to the balcony overlooking the arena calling it the best seat of the house. There he reveals himself to be Bolin. When Bolin wants to introduce Korra to his brother Mako, Mako tells him to get her out of the locker room and to get ready for their match. However Bolin ignores him.
When the match begins the radio broadcaster informs that the new Fire Ferrets have surpassed expectations, but face their toughest challenge tonight against the Golden Temple Tigerdillos for a place in the Championship. After a though match the Fire Ferrets won, but with a price. Hasook sprained his ankle during the match. Toza takes Hasook to the hospital and tells him everything will be okay. Korra congratulates Mako and Bolin on their win and asks if they are interested in showing her some pro-bending moves. When Bolin tries to figure out how his earthbending would translate to her waterbending, Korra tells him that won’t be a problem because she’s the Avatar. Later that evening Toza tells Mako and Bolin that Hasook is unable to play for a couple of weeks, Korra offers to take his place until he is better. This way the Fire Ferrets can still participate in the Pro-bending Championship and have a shot at winning. Tenzin however is not amused and thinks it’s nonsense. This encourages Korra even more to play.
When Bolin gets kidnapped by equalists, Korra and Mako team up to find him. They wait in the park for the Equalist propaganda spreader, hoping he would have some valuable information for them. As they wait, Korra and Mako get to know each other better. For the first time Mako opens up about his trauma and the fear of losing his brother. Korra comforts him and tells Mako they’re going to find Bolin. They track Bolin down to an abandoned warehouse, where an equalist gathering is taking place. There Korra and Mako witnessed first-hand Amon’s ability to strip a bender of their bending abilities. They save Bolin and later that night Mako apologizes to her for being so arrogant when they first met.
Although they managed to save Bolin, Amon left a deep impression on Korra and she grew fearsome of him. Kya is aware that something is troubling her and hopes Korra will talk to her about it. However Korra is reluctant to open up. Kya tells her it’s okay to fear, that everybody is afraid of something. Kya also informs her that it is not because she is the Avatar that she should be fearless. To cheer Korra up Mako and Bolin decide to show her the city and take her to a traditional Water Tribe restaurant. There she opens up about her upbringing. Later that night on the balcony overviewing the city Korra opens up to Mako in private about her fear, Mako tells her that she doesn’t need to be the Avatar to be special, because she’s special no matter what. That’s when they kiss, but get caught by Bolin. Bolin is a bit heartbroken because he was crushing on Korra but pretends he doesn’t care. Korra and Mako feel bad for him and pretend the kiss never happened.
The next day they learn that the night before gangs teamed up to attack a rich non-bending district but that the equalist interfered and took down the gang members even before the police arrived. Amon is being praised for his heroic act by non-benders. But tensions between the bending and non-bending community are higher than ever. That’s why councilman Tarrlok decided to throw a party for the high placed benders and non-benders in the city in the hopes to cut the escalating tension. Showing that benders and non-benders aren’t so different from each other. Korra gets invited as the guest of honour as a strategic move. Tarrlok even goes so far to buy her a beautiful dress to make sure that all eyes are on her.
During the party Tarrlok tries to talk to Korra in private, but Tenzin looks right through him and knows about his true intentions. Tenzin informs Korra about Tarrlok and stays close to her. When Tarrlok realizes that Tenzin isn’t going anywhere, he tells them that the gang attack was intended for rich non-benders property and not against non-benders specifically as Amon putted it. Tarrlok speculates that Amon knew of the attack and played everything into his own hand. Tarrlok wants to start an elite police force to fight Amon and to reassure benders that they’re safe from Amon and asks if Korra wants to join. Tenzin fears this will put more oil on the ever growing fire and worsen the tensions between benders and non-benders. A mystery man approaches and they quickly change the topic of conversation. Before Tarrlok presents the man he tells Korra to think about his offer. Tarrlok presents the mystery man as a good friend of his, Hiroshi Sato, a rich non-bender. Korra meets various people during the party, and realizes that they are looking up to her for help and to fix the problems of their city.
Later that evening on their way home Korra makes a stop at Avatar Aang’s momentum and tells the others she’ll come in a second. When she looks up she admits to herself that Avatar Aang would have known what to do and she realises that she’s clueless over how to handle the delicate situation about benders vs non-benders. As she gets ready to leave she notices Hamir lying on the ground as she gets dragged into the museum by equalists and chi-blocked. There she comes face to face with Amon who tells her he had pleasure observing her during the party. He tells her that he has no intentions taking her down right know, due to this making her a martyr and creating outrage over the entire world. He tells her he has everything planned out and that it isn’t her time yet, but he’s coming for her.

THE AVATAR-WORLD:
The Water Tribes: the culture of the Water Tribes, as well as their location in the polar regions of the Avatar-world, is primarily based on real-life Arctic cultures such as Inuit, Eskimo and Yupik. However it also borrowed a lot of elements from other cultures as Chinese and East-Asian tradition, elements of Native-American and Pacific Islander society and Venetian architecture (Northern Water Tribe). So, as you can see, a lot of different influences were merged together and created something new. So in my version I’m basing the Water Tribes on Indigenous tribes from all over the world and I would even go further with merging them together. I don’t want the Water Tribes to be primarily based on one culture, but really want to create something new. Something where you can recognise certain aspects from certain cultures, but can’t place the whole to one culture. For casting I’d focus on Indigenous people, let’s be honest, they are the most underrepresented in all media and are completely forgotten when people advocate for more diversity. In my fan-casting teenage Katara is played by the Native American actress Blu Hunt, adult Katara is played by the Native American actress Elena Finney, while senior Katara is played by the First Nation & Métis actress Tantoo Cardinal.
The Earth Kingdom: the architecture, clothing and culture of the Earth Kingdom are primarily based on China and its neighbouring states from different time periods. The Earth Kingdom is extremely large and diverse and contains different cultures within itself. In my version I’m basing Ba Sing Se on China, while the rest of the Earth Kingdom towns and villages are based on Korea , Vietnam, the Philippines, Mongolia, Malesia, etc. The closer you get to the Capital the more Chinese influences you can find and the mixture of these different cultures. Just like Avatar I’m merging different styles and time periods together, to create something new. But unlike the Water Tribes I’m not mixing everything together. For the Sandbender Tribes, I’m taking different Arabic influences (non-Islam) from different Arabic countries and merge them together. Like the Water Tribes, I want people to recognise certain aspects from certain countries, but not place the whole to one country.
Kyoshi Island: it’s aesthetically influenced by Japan and I want to keep it that way. In my version Kyoshi Island isn’t part of the Earth Kingdom anymore, since Avatar Kyoshi split from the main land, but the Earth Kingdom refuses to acknowledge their independence, as it views the island as a rogue region (like China views and treats Taiwan). This changed after the war ended and Earth King Kuei formally acknowledged them as a nation. Tensions rose after Hou-Ting became Queen. Although Kyoshi Island is based on Japan, I’m merging different styles and time periods together, as you can see with my Suki drawing. Where the Kyoshi warriors are a mix of samurai, ninja and aikido.
