Wow. Did you accidentally shake your camera?

AgiVega In reply to IcyAshford [2009-01-02 08:59:47 +0000 UTC]

Not shake, but zoom with it while it was doing the longexpo.

Longexpo? What's that?

AgiVega In reply to IcyAshford [2009-01-02 11:07:51 +0000 UTC]

Long exposition. You know, when the camera is taking the picture long, like for two or three seconds. In most cases, especially when you're using a camera by daylight, the camera takes the shot in 1/100 second, that is very short exposition. But when you want to take night photos, the normal light isn't enough for the camera, so you need to make the camera take the photo for a longer time, to give it time to "collect" enough light from the surroundings. So the camera takes the photo for several seconds. Mind you, with very simple compact cameras you can't really do this. The camera needs to have a manual option to allow you to select the exposition time yourself.

Wow. You sound like an expert with cameras.

So that's why the camera takes so long to take a picture whenever I set it to "night scene" mode. Thanks for the explanation! Maybe I should try that too and see the effect.

AgiVega In reply to IcyAshford [2009-01-02 12:25:52 +0000 UTC]

Yes, that is the reason. And that's why many "night scene" pics are blurry - people who have simple compact cameras usually don't have tripods, and without a tripod night shots get blurry. You can of course use the timer and set the camera down somewhere to make sure it doesn't move while it is doing a long expo.

I managed to make do with a box that supports my camera perfectly.

You manage to do the coolest stuff with your camera. I tried it with mine - all I got was a greyish black blur...

But did you use a tripod?

SparxFlame In reply to AgiVega [2009-01-02 17:56:55 +0000 UTC]

No... meep, i'm not that good a photographer! I have some weird digital one that nobody else wanted. I don't really know how to us it, which doesn't help. I think its just me being stupid...

AgiVega In reply to SparxFlame [2009-01-02 18:14:42 +0000 UTC]

If you don't have a tripod and want to make sure that your night shots don't get blurry, then use the timer (even simple cameras have that option), and set the camera down on a table, chair or whatever stable.
