Description Inspired by "The Chrysalis", an original acoustic instrument by Cris Forster (google "Chrysalis Foundation" if interested). I got so inspired by the concept of his creation that I had to have my own. In the making the main focus swayed from 'musical instrument' to 'musical sculpture' enough for me to call this original work.
The vibe I got from the pictures was very alien-high-tech-yet-ancient kinda thing so I expanded on that. The main pattern on the soundboards is from one of those crop circle pictures I found online. It has 60 steel strings emanating from an off-center steel/birch/rosewood ring with the other side being a mirror image, so 120 strings in total. It is suspended on an axle running through the drum to ball bearings encased in the stand arms.
It was made on and off during a 2,5 year period. While most of it was spent procrastinating and on other slightly less consuming projects, the bulk of it was contemplation and problem solving. The actual labour could be done in a few months. Overall it turned out quite nicely!

The spinning drum is 600mm (23,6") across and 150mm (5,9") deep

Ingredients:
Baltic birch plywood - stand and side of the drum
Birch and mahogany veneer - soundboards
White oak and spruce - structural bits inside
Ebony - pads of the brass legs
Brass
Steel
Iron

I hope this is the right category for this sort of thing, it's my first posting on DA!

I'm so curious to hear what it sounds like.Β  Have you any video of it that you can share?

Now that I have finally managed to purchase a new powerful computer for video editing, I'll be sure to make a short video on this one as well! Stay tuned!

This piece of work really reminds me of Duchamp, but you haven't mentioned him in your description. Β You may find it interesting to research his work. He had many of these 'Rotorelief' patterns that he tried to sell on turntables, but they proved to be unsuccessful in his lifetime. Β Apart from the rotating pattern the whole thing feels very much like a piece of his work. Duchamp is one of my favourite artists, so I do hope that you take this as the highest compliment.

I'm sort of familiar with Duchamp, mostly due to the controversial sides of his work (the urinal and all the "is it art?" etc.). Did not have him in mind when I made this though. I used to make guitars so this piece was a sort of bridge between musical instruments and art. I do take it as a compliment! Gonna look up those rotoreliefs. Thank you!

Now I understand why your work is so well executed. Β How wonderful to be able to make a guitar, it explains a lot. Β I find it interesting how our personal history affects Β our work so deeply. Β I loved the chrysalis instrument but didn't enjoy the reading of the poem. Β I prefer your instrument to the chrysalis, visually, and would love to hear how it sounds. Β I'm sure you could make an amazing video of it and post it on Youtube.

Actually, at the moment I'm learning a bit of editing so that I can make "making of" type videos for youtube of my future works. Just hit a bit of a snag on the road; my computer is not powerful enough for full HD video editing. I'm getting a new one shortly. Many have requested a video of this piece and it is surely on my to do list!

It's such a nuisance when expensive equipment is required? Β I'm often limited by what is within my budget or space. Β I'd love to work on a really large scale sometimes but then it's a matter of getting it around to exhibit it. Β What is required is to sell work for ten of thousands so that I don't need to consider limitations Β I'm looking forward to you getting your new computer so that I can see your work in motion. Β I want to make something kinetic myself for an upcoming exhibition on the theme music, but work needs to be handed in on Saturday I don't think I have enough time now. Β I feel inspired by your work and am looking forward to working in 3D again.

I fully share your grievances. Oh how wonderful it would be to not have such limitations! Full freedom to create; an end goal of mine. A worthy pursuit.

Btw. did you get my note?

This is so cool... What does it sound similar to, if anything?

Thank you! I'm tempted to say harp, but the sound is much more tinny. A bit like a dulcimer, albeit a very out of tune one!Β

Here's a link to the inspiration mentioned in the description:Β www.youtube.com/watch?v=HzQeuB…

Thank you! It sounds weird. I have no idea how I would go about tuning so many strings, but when you spin it and play both sides it's almost hypnotic!
