A new bike hire set up on a street in london. I think you have to be a member to hire one of these. It's still a great idea, no staff required

lol i remember those, about 8 or so months ago i went on a college trip to london and when lunch came along and we were allowed to get lost for 2 hours we poked them about a bit and figured out you have to have a barclay's or however you spell it card~ :/ but then i suppose thats a good thing, they'd easily get nicked and stuff by dumb kids and dumped in rivers or whatever cuz they're only a quid to hire for 30 minutes, the only thing making you take it back is your card is on it~

Nice shot. The system used in London, and the design of the bikes, is based on the Bixi program where I live, in Montreal. The first few bikes even came from there! But London does it year round (they don't have the bad winters Montreal does).

The first city to have it, actually....was LYON! Paris copied Lyon. Amsterdam went a step further and tried FREE bikes...but people nicked them, so they painted them pink, so people threw them into canals! Montreal indirectly copied Paris, but the design of the bike-holders is made in Montreal...that's what London is using (the Paris version has a bar on the side you "plug" the bike into...the Montreal variant is a lot more secure) Also, while the bike service is sponsored by Barclays and run under the Transport for London (hence the symbols), it was set up by a branch of the Bixi company, which is part of Stationments de Montreal (who oversee parking in Montreal, and introduced the controversial new system that essentially turns large chunks of the city into a large pay and display....without the "display" part since you register the spot you're parked at when you pay)
Paris was also NOT the first city to have (despite people liking to insist otherwise):
- cars
- taxi service (but it was the second, first was in Stuttgart, Germany!)
- the Metro (name comes from "Compagnie de Chemin de Fer Metropolitain".....which was a literal French translation of the Metropolitan Railway, who built the first ever underground railway, now part of the LU)
