Description I'll just leave this here...

It feels like such a long time ago now, but when I was living at the old place a decade or so back, my mum used to breed mallards. We had some pretty exotic kinds too-- some were even pure white, but sadly over the years we lost them all... except one.

The male on the right... dang, he must be at least... what? 8 years old now? Out of all the ducks we bred, he is certainly a survivor, when all his kin were killed by wild/neighbourhood dogs/folk and whatever else you could picture. (I remember several massacres where dozens were killed all at once... still pisses me off to think about really. God, how I despised that godless neighbourhood...)

Anyhoo, I don't know how he's managed to outlive them for so long, but he's still around at the old place, chatting up passing chicks while calling the shots where he lives. So as the ol' saying goes, talk about one lucky little duck...

I have a duck just like that white one. Good duck, when he isn't being randy as hell.

Hahaha, but that's just something natural with all ducks, right?

Damn, I can understand animals killing each other, but your neighbors? Well, it's not really surprising, just... not as common as it used to be, I thought. My mom's dog got killed by her neighbors because they were hungry. :/ That would piss me off too. At least that one's still alive. He's beautiful.

That he is. I always enjoy seeing him when I visit the old place to feed the horses grazing on the land. Been a few times now where I've dug into grocery bags to break apart a fresh dinner bun for him and his mate and so on.

It's hard to actually put a finger of blame on the neighbours I knew back when I was living in their area, but after what I used to witness there, that neighbourhood was hell regardless if they were directly responsible for the deaths of our birds. (Although the Canadian that used to live next to us deserved a bullet for some of the things he did.) Several households were owned by atheists, too, and the stories I could recall about them... lol. (And the Canadian was among them...) I'm just glad I'm living in an area now where the neighbours are friendly and are mostly all down to earth Aussies who are of an older, more respected generation.

I think it's nice to visit old places, see old acquaintances. & the little things in life, like feeding animals, haha. The first time I tried feeding a duck, I was young and thought the bird was trying to eat my fingers. x)

Canadian, huh? Stereotypes make them seem painfully nice, but there's always people like that wherever you go. It's unfortunate, but there's nothing much we can do about it. That's sounds like a really nice neighborhood, though. You deserve it.

lol, I don't really judge people by their nationality, but it does make it easier to speak of my neighbour by where he came from without giving away his name. In a nutshell he was a retired teacher turned fruit tree farmer, who made trouble for anyone without talking about it to their face. He was a coward, an arrogant fool, and respected no one but himself. From what I understand, though, life hasn't been treating him well ever since my family moved to this new neighbourhood. Couldn't happen to a nicer bloke.

(I could go into detail, but only if you want to know and like hearing when true justice is delivered in this world. XD)

Anyhoo! I think I had a similar experience with feeding my first duckling some soaked white bread pieces. Cute and ticklish.

Ah, I see. Hopefully, whatever problems he's accumulated won't make him cause even more grief. And I wouldn't mind listening if you wouldn't mind telling me the story. Stories are nice.

Cute and ticklish? Well, you seem to be accustomed to living near animals. My reaction was to stare at it like it bit off my entire hand and the strong reaction to just run far, far way. It didn't help that it kept following me, haha.

Aww... seems like you made a friend.

As for the story... where do I begin? XD My old neighbourhood had way too many to count... and most, if not all, speak badly of it. But yeah, I could always just focus on the Canadian and work my way from there.

A friend? Haha, that's one way to think about it. Oh, have you even seen little baby ducks following their mother? It's cute, haha. I've only seen that with chicks, though.

Anyway, sorry for such a late reply! Time passed way too quickly. The Canadian sounds like a good start though, if you're still up to it.

I was tempted to, but it'd be like writing an assay when it comes to length, so unless you like a long read...

Yeah, it took me almost a month to reply... sorry. And yep, I've seen plenty of mother ducks leading their young along. My family used to breed Mallards, after all.

Well, ultimately, it's your decision. If you don't want to, I won't push you to tell me.

Haha, it's okay. It's not like I reply instantly either. Let's just agree that neither of us seem to have a very stable schedule.

Wow. Seems you really did have a lot of contact with animals in your life, huh?

Pretty much. I don't think there's ever been a time where I haven't had a pet of some sort, and usually it's more than one!

Anyway, just want to apologise for taking over a half a year to respond. Hope all is well and that you have a great New Year.

wooo! I used to have duck too, when my parents had a farm! I loved to breeds ducks and see them grow. We had a white one just like that. As for the old one well, go figure, life is like that sometimes. On our hands, we had a old cat like that, she went through a lot and she died only b/c she was too old, like cats do in houses.

Aikurisu In reply to LeilansDream [2012-02-14 18:30:18 +0000 UTC]

Well, I never knew it until now, but apparently the oldest living recorded mallard reached 29 years old. Amazing. x_x

lol, anyhoo, I'm not sure what ages our cats lived to, but I know most, if not all, never died of old age. Something usually always got them.

They're so beautiful!^^ I've had ducks too but I've mostly bred little chickens since they're practically out of their egg shells. Lol I even give them names.XD

lol, I used to do that too when I was younger. Though it was easier back then to do so when my mother and I used to watch newborn chickens hatch from eggs we incubated with a good ol' lightbulb in a cat cage.
