Story:

The lieutenant walked softly without pause, though her ears betrayed her uncertainty of approaching this place, but she felt she needed to come here. There was someone she needed to speak to, if the conversation would be one sided, but it was something she wanted to tell them anyway.

Though they could never tell her how pleased they were with her accomplishments.

Having reached her goal, the doe turned her gaze upwards, to the many holes dotting the ceiling, wisps of moonlight filtering through them gently.

Lowering her gaze to the pool mere steps from her hooves, she sighed, there was no point in turning back now.

Swallowing hard she opened her mouth to speak.

"Lorraine?

I-I'm not sure I should be here...

I never did come when they...

When you went away."

Her ears flicked back, nervous someone might be near enough to hear the uncertainty in her voice, "I... I made it to being a Fawntaker like you wished, others tell me I'm quite good.

Sometimes comparing me to you or Aldus... I don't really like it, since I can't ever seeing myself replace either of you, but I've learned to live with it..."

Hulda stared at the faintly rippling water for a few moments, almost swearing she could see an eye in the moon's place, her eyes darted towards the ceiling, seeing moonlight pouring uninterrupted into the cavern, she glanced down again.

She smiled, thinking maybe Gaelach was listening, and intended to pass her words along.

"I have fawns now, you always wished to see my fawns, didn't you?" She vaguely recalled the pink painted doe asking about any fawns, at that time Hulda believed she'd never have any, strange to think the moonblessed doe had been correct, in that that thought would change someday.

"I'm afraid I left them with others this time...perhaps next time they can meet you."

Was she even doing this right?

"That's not even what I came to tell you..." She laughed weakly.

"Lorraine... I... I achieved something I thought I could never aspire to!

I took the place you so deserved for all your wisdom and skill, the place I'm certain I would have had to take from you.

I'm... the Fawntaker Lieutenant now."
She paused, as if expecting the doe to respond to this announcement.

"I realized in the last few weaks, what had been bugging me, despite the joys I felt in my new role.

I realized I had forgotten to tell you."

She moved closer to the pool, staring down into its glittering depths.

"I remembered a promise we'd made years ago.

That I would always come and tell you everything, I guess I failed this, no?

However, I am not here to reminisce on that.

Instead I came to make a new one, my dearest mentor.

I already swore an oath before the King, Oracle and Captain to bring new strength to the fawntakers.

I made an oath to the guards hoping to attain my previous rank.

Made the all important oath to Gaelach to bring honor to the herd.

But.

There was one I didn't swear an oath to and that is you."

She sucked in a deep breath, pausing in her small speech, her nose pointed skyward. To the small holes in the ceiling, the moon just visible beyond them.

"I, Hulda, swear to you, my most honored friend and mentor.

To lead the fawntakers as you led your group, to protect them as fiercely as I protected you, to serve the herd as diligently as you did.

So that when my time comes and the great owl carries me away...

I may look at you with pride and say I kept my promise to the very last."

The dappled doe bowed her head deeply to the pool, to the many glittering bones beneath the gentle water,  she neither saw nor felt the tears running down her face, nor saw the ripples they created as they fell.

After a few moments the Lieutenant rose from her position, bid her mentor farewell and turned away, she had a promise to fulfill.

A Lieutenant's promise.

I realized I never show Hulda expressing anything much, so have a semi-feels thing. >.>
