Description

I didn't find out Keiko died until that Sunday. We didn't have internet so I didn't find out until two days after his death that we had lost him. I was 14 years old.

My love for Keiko spread to my family members whether they liked it or not. They learned to care about him and my grandparents even incorporated him into their own lives - naming one of their new cats "Willy". So, when my grandmother called me on that fateful day she knew what she had to say to me was going to be hard. I can remember the moment she told me. I was sitting in our chair in the living room and my world stopped. My whale had died. I will always miss him, but I am so thankful that he was given the opportunity to be a free whale again. His legacy will continue in the other captive orcas waiting for their big move to a sanctuary. One day.

I was 10 and going to be 11 in a few weeks when Keiko passed, I never heard of him until I was a teenager around 5 years later. The first time I see Free Willy is when I was like 6 years old during a doctor's appointment. The appointment was only around 5-15 minutes long, and didn't get a chance to watch the movie as a whole until 2003 as a 10th anniversary set that has all 3 movies. Then I saw him in the movie, but didn't know his name.

I was 11 when he passed and I've loved "Free Willy" ever since I was little. Such a wonderful piece of art.
