Description It's time for another Looney Tunes character and this time it's my absolute favorite when I was a kid - Wile E. Coyote (fun fact: I've always misspelled his name, as I thought that there's a double "l" in "Wile" ).

I've never drawn him before in my life, so sketching him was a bit tricky for me considering his design which is both interesting and complex. And I especially mean his face. So it took me a while to understand how it's built.

As always, I hope you'll enjoy these sketches as much as you enjoyed my last ones.

Next character to sketch:

Wile E. Coyote belongs to Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc.

Oh, yes! I remember he used to call himself like that. Even though with all his inventions he never managed to catch that Roadrunner. Or did he? I can't remember if he did in any episode. It's been ages since I watched any of his cartoons.

No he never caught the road runner. There was one short, where he managed to grab him by the neck and then was sitting there holding him, but it turned out to be a cloud of dust. Roadrunner then showed up and scared him. It's interesting how when he's after Roadrunner, he almost never talks, but when he's after Bugs Bunny, he talks quite a bit and has a British accent. I like when Bugs Bunny blew him up and he's all grey. He then said, "Poor chap. He had his chance. Now he must take the consequences." Lol. Did you know that in the comic strips we learn what the E stands for? He asked his uncle, (I forget the uncle's name), what the E stands for and the uncle answered, "Ethelbert." So that's his full name. Wile Ethelbert Coyote.

I didn't know Wile actually can speak. I don't think I've seen that episode. I must check it out sometime. I didn't know about his second name either. I remember I've always wondered what that "E." is supposed to mean. So thanks for telling me that.

He can. Here's a video of clips from the 5 shorts where he's trying to catch Bugs Bunny. www.youtube.com/watch?v=GEUuZ_UzBQw . I only remember the titles from 2 of those shorts. Operation Rabbit and Rabbit's Feat. Just like all the others that try to kill Bugs Bunny, like Yosemite Sam, Elmer Fud and Tazmanian Devil he's too stupid to beat him. Like I said, when Wile is chasing Road Runner, he rarely speaks at all. He screams in pain sometimes. One short, (I forget the title), he set a giant bear trap, with a bowl of bird seed. Road Runner ate the bird seed, but the trap didn't snap. After he left, Wile was inspecting the trap and it snapped of course. He's then walking away with his body in a zig zag pattern and he looks at the camera and says, "Ouch." Usually when he's after Road Runner he talks by holding up signs.

You're welcome.

Yes, that's what I remember! He used to talk to the audience mostly by holding up signs and I've always found that funny. Then again, if he can speak, why don't he simply talk? Well, that's a cartoon and some things don't have to make sense, especially not in a LT cartoon. Same thing with his ideas how to catch Roadrunner. He thinks of so many complicated ways to do that, but he still can't learn that he falls when he looks down a canyon.

I actually wanted to draw a sign and write something funny on it, but I wasn't creative enough to come up with anything witty, so I gave up on that idea.

This guy is practically in the same boat as Sylvester-so incredibly pathetic in his attempts to catch his mortal foe that you end up pitying him most of the time and actually wanting to see him catch the road runner. (But you'll only get to see that in parodies and the like.) Though he is incredibly persistent and resourceful when it comes to building traps, even though they always backfire on him and wind up hurting the ever-loving daylights out of him instead. I guess that is why they named him Wile Also, sometimes I wish Acme was a real company. Wouldn't it just be nice to have a company that could give you anything you ever wanted on demand? How much more convenient life would be!

And of course I should mention my character Linda shares a species with him! Although that's about all they have in common; after all, Linda and her family are a lot less 'cartoony', so to speak, plus instead of being cunning and resourceful, she's timid, sensitive and compassionate. It is kind of a stereotype that coyotes are cunning, sneaky tricksters-I think if you thought that way about her, her feelings would be hurt! (Although I will say her younger brother Ernie, a shyster auto dealer, fits more in line with that...but she and her family are largely ashamed of him). I like to try to go against stereotypes with characters-I think it's too easy to fall into that trap with furry characters and make them fit their species stereotype when it's probably not that realistic. But then again I'm more of a 'slice-of-life' writer, anyways

Good sketches BTW

Haha, yes Did he catch that Roadrunner in any episode? I don't remember actually. I used to watch Wile cartoons when I was a kid and enjoyed them a lot. All that complex stuff he constructed. And still it was impossible for him to catch that annoying bird.

Yes, they both are coyotes. Ever thought about a crossover? I don't think it would be a great idea, though. Wile is way too much cartoony than Linda, so I guess that would be silly to put them together in one story.

Thank you so much!

Wile actually did catch the Roadrunner at the end of the cartoon called, "Soup or Sonic," only it didn't turn out quite like he wanted. ^+^

Oh yes! I've just seen it. He didn't know what to do next. Seems like after all these years of chasing Roadrunner, he forgot the purpose of it.

It’s hard to believe this is your 1st attempt at drawing Wile—all three sketches are true to form in both his design and expression. I know what you mean about Wile’s face being a challenge to draw—he’s got a lot to consider in all three axes: his snout, ears and cheek ruffs. But you really nailed all three with the thick eyebrows in there for good measure. Instafave!! ^+^

Aisudi In reply to mreiof [2018-12-08 21:28:05 +0000 UTC]

Thank you so much! Yes, but, like I mentioned, it took me a long while to get the hang of his design. Wile is a bit different than other LT characters, so maybe that's why he's more complicated to draw. Strangely enough, I always start with drawing ears, but here I totally didn't know what to draw first. ^^ Next time I'm having a go at Roadrunner. I'm curious how he'll come out.
