Description 10th May, 1893: No. 999 enters service and while hauling the New York Central Railroad’s then new Empire State Express, reaches a record speed of 112.5mph.

9th May, 1904: GWR’s City of Truro achieves a top speed of 102.3mph while pulling the “Ocean Mails” special from Plymouth, Devon to Paddington station in London.

So there you have it: Two 4-4-0 locomotives that are the topic of debate in terms of their speed records.
