Description:

The Equine Lurker is a very uniquely designed creature that has become mostly domesticated by the humanoid community for both hunting and transportation. The Equine Lurker is the dragon version of a horse, having many horse-like and Lurker-like characteristics. This creature is mostly gentle and loving by nature, but is very courageous and will defend his or her owner from anything, no matter its size, if their owner(s) is/are threatened in any fashion. Because of this, the Equine Lurker can tend to be more of a family animal, rather than a widely owned one like the Frayed Tree Lurker or the Ikybu. But if they are raised in an environment of a collective group of people that all take care of them together, the Equine Lurker will easily adjust as become just as attached and defensive of all the Tribe as it would to a single or few individuals.

The Equine Lurker is omnivorous, meaning it eats both plants and meat. Its diet varies according to the region of its birth, but their typical menu consists of small mammals, rodents, wheat, hay, grass, and a variety of wild berries. Even though it has a mouth filled with serrated teeth, it has back molars used to masticate hard food it may digest, as well as crush bone. The Equine uses its teeth and narrow jaws to eat berries and leaves from trees in a unique fashion. First it places the food into its mouth, closing its jaws and gripping firmly—but just enough to grate the leaves and berries from the branch as it gently pulls its jaws back. This way it can get mouthfuls of food with every bite, so no energy is wasted on feeding.

Even though it belongs in the Lurker family of dragons, the Equine Lurker is more Leaper or Whipper by true form. The reason it is classified as a Lurker is due to the multiple enhancements this specie has to fool other doraganoids into believing it is indeed a Lurker. These ‘enhancements’ are used to protect the Equine Lurker in most any environment.

The Equine Lurker has several characteristics that ditto those of a Lurker. For example, it has tall, often frayed ears. It also has the long, elegant build: this provides the Equine Lurker with speed and agility while running over the hills in often-large herds (like horses, which is a trait it earns from its Leaper and/or Whipper origins). It has large paws, each with five ir-retractable talons, and its elbow and heels have tall spines on the ends. Rather than having its spine grow up and protrude from its back like a Lurker, it simply has two rows of tall, thin, but harmless spines made from twined hair follicles (much similar to a Rhinoceros’ nose horns) on its back and tail. The Equine Lurker howls, shrills, and hisses, mimicking the Lurker’s noises to the point of accuracy anyone not able to see it and hearing it’s cries would certainly fear a Lurker’s presence. To complete the illusion, the Equine Lurker’s tongue is built exactly like a Lurker’s—snake-like, long, but un-forked. The tongue serves the same purposes as any Lurker’s would: for scent and heat-sensory. But the thing that really finishes the illusion is the Equine Lurker’s extraordinary ability to not only copy the appearance of a threatening Lurker, but the scent. Its body is lined with special sweat glands that create a smell that will fool any animal into believing it is a Lurker of any type or gender. Because of this, it can not only fool any nearby prey or predators in to believing it is a Lurker, it can trick a Lurker into believing it is one of its own, enabling the Equine Lurker to walk among true Lurkers mostly unnoticed and undisturbed. But most would be quick to demand that male Lurkers, being incredibly territorial as they are, would smell the Equine and attack. But the Equine is capable of making a male believe the Equine is a female, provoking a quick smell and approval, but no harm. All of these elements combined make the Equine Lurker represent the best illusion of an actual Lurker. Riders use these creatures to hunt Lurkers, to protect their families, and as loving pets and sources of food and transportation—they have been using them for centuries, and the end isn’t in sight.

“How do we know it is an actual Lurker, rather than something else?” you must be asking. Well, for one, it shares several characteristics with both Leapers and Whippers. Like a Leaper, the Equine has special muscle tendons in its hind legs, enabling it to leap up to 20 feet, and giving it extra press-off for sprinting. This proves useful for the rider, enabling the rider to travel long distances over harsh terrain. Like a Whipper the Equine Lurker has a long, thick, muscular tail (Lurkers tend to have long, thin, bony tails), and the and is tipped with a mass of hair and fur. And, unlike true Lurkers, it has horns and a brightly colored pattern (though there are other types that copy the colors of the Lurkers of that region). But the thing that has breeders most confused are the strange markings on the Equine Lurker’s hide; it resembles no other type of doraganoid anywhere thus discovered and seems to serve no true purpose…

The structure and scent of the Equine Lurker may imitate that of a Lurker, but, in truth, it remains a mystery of its true origins. Is it a Leaper? Is it a Whipper? Is it a mutated Lurker? Is it a hybrid? Or is it a creature unique to itself? Perhaps we will never know...

I think you would sit a little closer to the neck, putting your head between its large horns. You'd probably hold on to the mane

Gorgeous picture by the way!

Hey, I know how to make the glare now ^^, but I wonder: how do you change the glare color? It's always yellow when I try to use it, and I'm wanting to add glare to Sesshoumaru's hair (I'm almost done with him, and he looks MUCH better than the last few ones I have tried).

giovannag In reply to akarui [2004-08-07 14:00:57 +0000 UTC]

Do you make it with the blending options? If yes, you choose the color in the outer glow window. In the bleding options, select the outer glow and click in the word to open the options for other glow. You will see a square with yellow color. Just click in this and you can change the color! All the options to other glow are in this, play with the controls to see the effects!

akarui In reply to giovannag [2004-08-08 22:58:49 +0000 UTC]

I can't find the blending options thingy. I just use the 'layer styles": 'outger glow'.

giovannag In reply to akarui [2004-08-09 03:42:41 +0000 UTC]

Ah, should be the same thing!
There others options in this layer styles? I think you can have the same things of the blending options in my PS version.

Stunning job Akarui! I love this Lurker's design, the mane thick mane and head are wonderful, such a wonderful combination of equine features as well as lurker features. I really love the grace of this Lurker's body design. Very elegant, this particular Equine's markings are beautiful and the color combination works spetacularly well. The posing really reflects the power and agility of this particular breed, and the background for them is just wonderful. Very creative and sometimes the mystery of what births a specific creature are best left unknown
