Akimiya — Tutorial: Drawing the Body Part 1 (Proportion)

Description Other random things
- The length of the foot from the tip of the toes to the heel is the length of the forearm! (try it on yourself)

- Slightly lengthening the legs makes a character look taller; Likewise, short legs and a long torso makes a character look shorter.

- Be sure to keep the proportions in mind even when you're drawing a sitting character! It's very easy to make the legs too long.

I think the "What not to do" part of this is more useful than the other side, since the stuff I talk about have been repeated over and over again in anatomy books and other tutorials.

Part two coming.. I don't know when!

I printed out this tutorial to study off of inrl so I hope that isn't a bother.  Thank you for making this because it is so helpful to know what I shouldn't do when I draw.

"Yaoi Hands" is SUCH A thing. One of the reasons I can't read sooo many shoujo novels is just... the men's hands are like 200% bigger than their faces!

This is very nice Akemi, its not long and technical but gives some really nice advice and also shows examples of the common mistakes people make. It is very helpful to someone like me, who really needs to study up on figure drawing more. So thanks!

P.S.-i make the big head, small body, mistake ALL-THE-TIME.

X3 Oh, CLAMP
For what it's worth, I completely agree with the difference between deciding to and unintentionally drawing those mistakes. CLAMP Really knows their stuff when it comes to painting and drawing things in correct proportion no problem albeit the four girls have their own ways of doing it. But they choose to style their art in a way that just shifts the anatomy in a way that they like.
I figure if you know the basics of anatomy, you can do things to your own fitting
Thanks for the tutorial!

Is it terrible that some of the examples you gave us on the right that were anatomically incorrect made me burst out laughing? My favorite "incorrect" piece has definitely gotta be the huge yaoi hands.

Hahah ^^ Yeahh, the yaoi hands really are everywhere!
But the last picture it's from CLAMP, and it's not too long but adifferent style of art (I can't remember the name right now)
At first i tought the same as you, but then i learnt it ^^

Akimiya In reply to Ruby97 [2013-01-01 20:58:55 +0000 UTC]

I know everyone has their own opinion but to the average person looking at it, their bodies are in fact way too long. If you look at the arms, they're too short compared to the legs. The character would not be able to touch their toes when they're bending over, and if they sit down and hug their knees, the legs would go over the head (which just looks weird as heck lol). This is not a "style" but rather a mistake made by the animators due to lack of budget.
Please be very careful when using the "style" argument as all-too-often it's used as an excuse for bad anatomy.

LostPuzzle In reply to Akimiya [2013-01-04 05:33:12 +0000 UTC]

Actually, the comics are drawn in the same style. It is indeed intentional; CLAMP is known for their dis-proportioned anatomical structure in characters.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Akimiya In reply to LostPuzzle [2013-01-04 06:29:57 +0000 UTC]

I feel that it somehow works better in the comics because it's consistent. Idk, when you look at different screenshots of the anime, it's actually really inconsistent, indicating a lacking budget lol.
It's true, they do. However, CLAMP is often criticized both within the artist community and in the fan community and made fun of for those proportions. Whether a beginner artist should follow in their footsteps is up to the individual, but this guide is only teaching that it's not technically proportionally correct.

Of course And anyways, I believe there is a saying somewhere that says we must know the rules before we break them~

yami-neko2912 [2012-12-31 17:42:08 +0000 UTC]

nice! but i think you shouldn't take anime/manga art for the common mistake part since it's kinda insulting for some people. they're mangakas~! of course they know that. it's just their style

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Akimiya In reply to yami-neko2912 [2013-01-01 21:15:18 +0000 UTC]

Not necessarily. There are plenty of mangaka who admit in interviews that they can't draw well.. Manga is supposed to be more about the story anyways (according to the editor of Shonen Jump). Professional artists are people who draw for a living, but that doesn't indicate that everything they do is correct.
Sorry, I won't remove it because I think free speech is important, especially in an industry like art, where professionals should always be open to criticism anyways. If no one said anything, the standards of the industry will fall very quickly.
