Zebu horn from 40cm to nearly one meter with a braid so that it can be hold on the shoulder.

Perfect for sounding attack or retreat. With practice, you can blow two to three differents sound, meaning that you can creat a code.

Like all my product, this one is made of vegetable leather. It's a leather tanned with vegetable product like oak bark. This particulary leather can be worked as wished. It absorb sweat and let the skin breath. It's sturdy and with care it can last for years.
Cut by myself then dyed. It received a first coat of oil.

Like all my product it is fully handmade by myself.
Every comment is welcome.
Thanks in advance for faving and adding.
I wish to improve, so I'm open to every suggestion

Really digged the green one. pretty it up with brass, make it a sounding horn as well as a drinking horn and then you got yourself a buyer!

That would be complicated. Drinking horn have bees wax on their internal side so that you can drink in it safely. But this bees wax will split if you use it for blowing.
I'm afraid that you will need to choose... or buy one of each.

Strange, i've seen one being both, perhaps only meant for display. tell me, does the horn truly work when blowing it? or will it serve better as a drinking tool i wonder.

Maybe someone didn't care to drink in a horn that isn't healthy.
I have myself two blow horn, one of around 40cm and one "human-tall", mean nearly one meter. When I make them sound, people can hear me 500m to 1km around, depends if you are in a grassland or in a city.
Personnaly, I think that a blowing horn and and a drinking horn a two very different things. And a drinking horn doesn't cost much, so my opinion is that it is thinking to much. A drinking horn cost (with the holder) 25 (15cl) to 40(45cl) euros. Of course, there is special big ones that can contain 1 liter. These cost (with the holder), nearly 80 euros.

Fascinating. so a hybrid is possible, just less 'healthy' as you call it. tell me, is there any way you can show me on Youtube how horns sounds when blown? the only real reference i have seen is a scene in LOTR (Lord Of The Rings). a really powerful sound! but i'm just afraid it will sound geezy and weak if i where to choose a blowing horn but a beautiful blowin horn is really what i favor, but drinking from one would be awesome too!

A blowing horn of around 60cm sound like the blowing in LOTR when the Rohirrim attack the mordor army. A shorter will blow higher, a longer will blow lower.

Drinking horn are usually 20 to 30cm long, so they are a lot shorter.

I'm sorry but I have nothing for recording :s

I understand, well i found a video, could you, with your expertise, point out what horn i would need to perhaps achieve a familiar blowing sound: [link]

notice that Boromir (the single individual) has a handwielded horn, i blows great! but the horns from the army of rohirrim, can they sound like that with the effect of reverb? like it echoes? that's truly epic!

akinra-workshop In reply to Nils-Iver [2012-03-29 17:27:54 +0000 UTC]

I think that the echoes was partially made by computer.

To obtain a sound similar to Boromir and Rohirrim, a 60cm long would be nice. After, you can do some effect when blowing, you will have to catch the trick.

I have a 60cm one too, I can blow three different sound.

an 60cm sounds very big to have something hanging from your side, do you have any images on how to demonstrate a 'wielding' or how to handle a horn in both using and when unsheathed.

how can you make three different sounds from one horn?

akinra-workshop In reply to Nils-Iver [2012-03-29 19:02:43 +0000 UTC]

With a braid like those on the picture it really isn't a problem. You keep the great blow horn in the leather when blowing, you didn't "unsheathed" it.
Those two pic where taken a long time ago but you can see a friend blowing the horn and myself wearing it in a fight : [link] and [link]

It depend of the power of your breath and how much you purse your lips

I see, that's even better! do tell however; are you capable to 'pretty it up' with some brass motives or such? i remember a very fine DD here on DeviantArt which was a drinking horn as well as a blowing horn, VERY beautiful.

akinra-workshop In reply to Nils-Iver [2012-03-30 05:45:12 +0000 UTC]

Yeah I saw it.
I can't work with brass like that myself, I will need to talk to a friend or two who work with metal so that they can make me the brass pieces.

But it isn't the same cost. For a 60cm long blowing horn with a leather braid decorated, you will have to pay something like 100 euros.
FOr a horn decorated with brass, it will likely be twice more : 200 euro. Maybe even higher

Nils-Iver In reply to akinra-workshop [2012-03-30 06:42:09 +0000 UTC]

Does not seem to be a problem. i contacted the person that made the DD but the cannot speak english for 5 useless penny's so that's a grave shame because i really would love something familiar from him. are you sure the people you know can compensate with his skills? otherwise that price is not reeeeaally a problem.

hey, what do you think would happen if a flute where attached at the blowing end?

akinra-workshop In reply to Nils-Iver [2012-03-30 10:08:01 +0000 UTC]

Don't know. The horn sound because you made it vibrates with your lips, that's how it work.

I will contact them and keep you informed.
So if I understand, I will work with them for something similar to the DD? Meaning a brass border for the large part and a tip with something like a cap so that it can be open for blowing and closed for drinking.

Nils-Iver In reply to akinra-workshop [2012-03-30 11:15:27 +0000 UTC]

Indeed, but how unhealthy can it become if it's for both drinking and blowing? are we talking unhealthy as candy instead of green food?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

akinra-workshop In reply to Nils-Iver [2012-03-30 11:27:42 +0000 UTC]

No, we are talking about germ that develop in the horn and which could go in your drink if not stopped by bees wax.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Nils-Iver In reply to akinra-workshop [2012-03-30 11:58:58 +0000 UTC]

eeew, but you said that if it was made for blowing as well, will that ruin the bees wax protection?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

akinra-workshop In reply to Nils-Iver [2012-03-30 14:19:05 +0000 UTC]

I don't really know ( never test it), but I suppose that the vibration from blowing will, with time, weakened and by the end, spit, the bee wax.

Like I said, a drinking horn is between 25 and 40 euros. Exeptionnal big ones might up to 80 euros.

For a blowing horn, it is between 40 and 120 euros. Exeptionnal big ones might up to 150-160 euros.

The extra work needed for transforming a blowing horn in both a blowing and a drinking one add an extra cost of at least 20 euros and surely something like 30-35 euros. That's the price of a drinking horn so... I don't really think that it is interesting, to keep 5 or 10 euros, to risk you health with a bees wax that might not last long.

Nils-Iver In reply to akinra-workshop [2012-03-30 14:39:00 +0000 UTC]

I understand.

i think it'll do with only a blowing horn then, but a pretty one like the DD. is that managable?

akinra-workshop In reply to Nils-Iver [2012-03-30 17:03:46 +0000 UTC]

Do you wish absolutly brass or bronze decoration you a very fine and detailed carved leather will do it? The effect isn't the same, but leather tooled at the summum can be as pretty as metal decoration.

Ces derniers temps je vois que tu ajoute des"médaillons" métalliques en plus de tes gravures etje trouve que l'association des deux rend vraiment bien !!
